Summary of Director’s Annual Report (2007-2008) On Annual Institute Day 12/4/08 INSTITUTE OF MEDICAL SCIENCES BANARAS HINDU UNIVERSITY ANNUAL DAY SATURDAY, APRIL, 12, 2008 1 Distinguished Chief Guest of the Annual Day, Prof. J.K.Sinha, the Guest of Honour, Dr.Pooja Bhardwaj, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor Prof.Panjab Singh, Members of the Executive Council of Banaras Hindu University, Deans Faculties of Medicine, Ayurveda and Dental Sciences, Members of the Academic Council, Medical Superintendent, S.S.Hospital, Invited Guests, esteemed Faculty members, Resident Doctors, Students, Employees of the Institute and the Hospital, media persons, ladies and gentlemen, I am pleased to welcome you on the occasion of the 48th Annual Day of our Institute of Medical Sciences and share with you our achievements during the last one year i.e. 2007 and 2008. The Annual Day gives us opportunity of reviewing our progress each year. This also gives us an occasion to reaffirm our resolve to do even better in the coming years, marching steadily together towards the ultimate aim to realize the dreams of the beloved founder of our Institute. The progress we have made has been entirely driven by the inspiration and encouragement of our ever dynamic and charismatic Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Panjab Singh. The Banaras Hindu University, a temple of learning, was the creation of our great Nationalist leader Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya way back in the year 1916. It has fulfilled the aims of its founder by helping in the development of the country in the field of education, research and personality development. The luminaries that flocked to the services of this great University proudly include Prof.K.N.Udupa, who founded our Institute of Medical Sciences. A great visionary as he was, Prof.Udupa created a unique medical institution with modern Medicine and traditional Indian MedicineAyurveda under one roof. I take this opportunity to pay homage on behalf of the Institute to both the founders – Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya and Prof.K.N.Udupa. Our whole hearted dedication towards our patients, research and medical education will be, I believe, a great tribute to them. I am extremely happy on the achievements of our Institute faculty members thus far though my expectations from them are even higher and I am sure that my dreams will be fulfilled in future. With this all, I appraise before you a brief account of what we have attained in the last one year. 2 ACTIVITIES OF THE STUDENTS Our students have done extremely well in studies as well as in sports and other co curricular activities The sports activities started in the last week of January & ended with the closing ceremony of ELIXIR 2008. SIR SUNDERLAL HOSPITAL Sir Sunderlal Hospital (SSH) was established in the year 1926 initially with 96 Beds. It named after Sir Sunderlal, the first Vice-Chancellor of the Banaras Hindu University. Establishing a hospital was a long cherished dream of Mahamana Pt. Madan Mohan Malaviya that was fulfilled in the year 1924 when His Highness Late Shri Prabhu Narayan Singh, the former Kashi Naresh, laid the foundation of the hospital. Presently the Hospital has grown to a 1165 bed hospital (Modern Medicine 1029; Ayurveda 136). The SSH attached to the Institute of Medical Sciences, B.H.U. is primarily a teaching and training hospital for the Undergraduates, (MBBS / BAMS), Post Graduates (MD / MS / MDS / MD. (Ay.)), Post-Doctoral (DM / MCh), Ph.D. and Diploma Nursing scholars. Besides it also imparts Inservice training to Paramedical staff. The Hospital is housed in a multistoried building. It has 2 unique features not found in any medical establishment of the country. Firstly, it blends Indian (Ayurveda) and Modern Systems of Medicine under one roof. Secondly, it is situated in a sprawling University Campus with ongoing close interfaculty co-operation in research. The SSH has a vast catchment area, being the only Tertiary Care Hospital in North Eastern UP providing medical cover to over 15 crores population of Eastern UP, Western Bihar, adjoining areas of Madhya Pradesh and Nepal. It also caters for the medical needs of its University Employees, their Families and University students. It is a premier referral hospital not only for the City Hospitals, DLW, Military Hospital, District Hospitals, NTPC, Coal India and BHEL, etc but also for the VIPs / VVIP s visiting the Varanasi Division. The Hospital is primarily maintained on aid from Ministry of Human Resource Development, GOI through University Grants Commission. Recently the Hospital’s earning through “Revolving Fund” has helped greatly in generating funds locally for maintenance of the Hospital infrastructure and instruments. A certain amount of its share is also transferred to the University pool. 10 HOSPITAL STATISTICS During the Calendar Year 2007, the Hospital Statistics as received from the Medical Record Section of the Hospital are as follows:Total No. of OPD Patients = 707912 Total No. of Admissions = 42612 Total No. of Surgical Operations = 19941 Total No. of Births = 2137 Total No. of Deaths = 3003 Total No. of Emergency Patient, OPD = 65962 Superannuation = 24 Resignations = 3 Services Abandoned/ Retirements = 0 Suspensions/ Terminations = 0 Deaths = 3 (Major, Minor & other procedures) FEW IMPORTANT DEVELOPMENTS DURING THE YEAR 2007-2008 (IMS & S.S.HOSPITAL) 1. Some of our ongoing major projects are establishment of an ultra modern 64 slice Computed Tomography Scan, construction of a superspeciality Trauma Centre, Dental College and College of Nursing near the OPD block of the S.S. Hospital and at the foundation stone site of the Banaras Hindu University. New departments and centers at the horizon include the Departments of Nuclear Medicine, Transfusion Medicine, Medical Oncology, Biostatistics, Centers of Pre-natal Diagnosis and Genetic Counseling, Wound Management, Excellence in Ksharsutra, International Centre of Panchkarma and Yoga, etc. The Institute is also procuring modern equipments for its different departments. I am sure that all these facilities will together deliver comprehensiveness and prestige to our Institute and set the standards very high indeed. I see only a few centers in the country comparable to our Institute and the credit goes undoubtedly, to all the human resource of our esteemed Institute who are discharging their duties with sincerity and vigor. Let us resolve once again to make our Institute the best in our country. // JAI HIND // 13 14
