Digital Libraries -e553 Title Why? What? How? OUTLINE FOR UNIT 06 Metadata - Representation A prerequisite for effective searching and handling of digital resources is effective organization and representation of data or content in a way that machines can recognize what is what and then act accordingly. Enter metadata as a solution - a standardized description of what a text or any object is all about. It labels parts of the text (or object) with some standardized, agreeable labels or tags. Metadata is a mechanism for a description of digital resources and things on the Web as well, in order to be going from machine-readable to machineunderstandable. Digitization by itself is not enough. Metadatadization (to coin a term) is essential as well. Considering meta data conceptually as knowledge representation schemes and pragmatically as value added information enabling information objects to be identified, represented, managed, and accessed. Examination of concerns with and importance of metadata in two environments: library and the Web.
