Course Information and Expectations: During your student teaching assignment, you will have a cooperating teacher for each separate assignment (elementary and secondary), a university supervisor (from the PSU College of Education) and an academic supervisor (from PSU, Art Education program). Thus, even though I supervise you to a lesser extent than your university supervisor, I will still be giving you two hours of credit (pass/fail) for work you do for me during your student teaching. I will be making at least 1-2 visit(s) to your school(s) to formally observe your teaching. I will usually come during the middle or latter half of your two assignments, but I’m open to your planning and suggestions within my schedule. My goal is to see you at your best during these visits, so please plan and prepare well. Evaluation (Grading) Grading Scale: This is a “pass/fail” course. You must have 70% of all points to receive a grade of “pass.” 1). Reflection Journal: Please submit by attachment to an e-mail, one journal entry per week from weeks 1 – 16 of the semester. This component is worth 15 points per week Observations regarding the general classroom/school atmosphere that week; Successes you noted; Concerns you have; Questions you have; Reflections on how you, yourself, could improve anything that did not go well during the week. REMEMBER: Please put ART579, Student Teaching and your name in the Subject of the e-mail you send, and attach your journal entry to the e-mail. 2) High School Course Syllabus (50 points) Please prepare a syllabus for one of the classes you are teaching at the high school level. You are free to consult with your cooperating teacher(s), and to examine his/her course syllabus, if available, but be sure not to simply copy his/her syllabus. Create your own syllabus. How would you present the course in your own classroom? 3) Formal Visit (300 points each for two visits; points double if I visit only once during the semester) I’ll be coming to visit you according to the schedule that we work out together during our initial and follow-up meetings. Ideally, I’ll make two visits, one at each assignment, though PSU requires only one visit. I will be observing your teaching performance and will assess several aspects of it during my visit. A. Preparation Prior to my arrival, please prepare the following and present them to me before my observation. A copy of your lesson plan (your own format) – available when I arrive A copy of the textbook if referenced A copy of any handout(s) you prepare or use B. Implementation of the lesson Accuracy of concepts presented Rapport with the students Classroom environment and management Lesson design and presentation C. Reflection This is your written reflection in your journal on the week following my visit to observe your teaching. During each of my observation visits, I would like to talk to your cooperating teacher for approximately 10-15 minutes prior to your presentation, and to visit with you for about 15-30 minutes following my observation. Please make the necessary arrangements in advance. 4) Professional Semester Academic/Departmental Meetings The professional semester calendar includes two meetings with your academic supervisor during your professional semester schedule. These meetings will be in 303 Porter Hall, unless otherwise specified.
