Dr. Chuck Blatchley, Steve Brown, Dr. Chris Christman, Dr. Sunghee Choi, Dr. Hazel Coltharp,

Dr. James Dawson, Dr. Carol Deats, Dr. Marilyn Dishman-Horst, Dr. Jean Dockers, Cris Elliott,

Gloria Flynn, Josh Johnson, Dr. Rusty Jones, Dr. Lyle Morgan, Dr. Alice Sagehorn, Dr. Khamis

Siam, Dr. Dixie Smith, Dr. Howard Smith, Terri Swanson, Dr. Kelly Woestman and Irene Zegar were in attendance.

Dr. Dockers gave a report on the recent NCATE visit. There was one Area for Improvement

(AFI) related directly to this committee. The AFI was continued from the previous 2004 visit that not all secondary programs require adequate field experiences prior to the professional semester. Discussion was held regarding the evaluation of the field experiences required by departments outside of the professional education courses. The Math department requires the cooperating teacher for MATH 480 Clinical Experience complete a rubric of two lessons presented by the teacher candidate as well as a final evaluation of the candidate’s performance.

The teacher candidate is also to record one lesson to be peer evaluated. Students in Biology,

Chemistry and Physics are evaluated based on a 3 category rubric scale for their experience within Techniques. They are also evaluated on their performance assisting in the labs within their respective departments. Family and Consumer Science candidates are evaluated by the cooperating teacher and also complete a self-evaluation. Dr. Dockers asked that the Office of

Teacher Education receive copies of these evaluations to include in student files. This will provide documentation to be used as evidence of these additional field experiences.

The Annual Program Summary Report was discussed. Steve Brown emailed a link to each department along with a blank template. This link to LiveText contains data for KSDE assessments, follow-up surveys, content scores and other knowledge base data outside of the

Teacher Work Sample. Data from faculty evaluations and advisement surveys are also stored here for each respective department. This specific data will be used to evaluate unit operations.

The summary will go to the College of Education Assessment Committee for review and provide each department with the opportunity to annually review their program and make decisions based upon the data. The annual process will provide ready data for future program reviews.

Dr. Dockers shared that the Student Teacher Orientation for spring 2011 professional semester candidates will be held on Thursday, December 9 th

from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. This will now be the standard practice to hold the orientation in the semester prior to the candidates reporting for the student teaching semester. For fall semester candidates, the orientation will be held in April and in December for spring semester candidates. A concern regarding the time and interference with content courses was expressed. The time that the orientation is to be held will be considered carefully in future semesters.

Amanda Hill shared that Praxis II scores are updated after each test administration. Every department will receive the pass rates for all programs after each update. They will also receive their specific content scores if changes have been made for their program. A date will be included in the footer of each document for easy reference.

The need for a classroom management course to be added as a requirement for secondary/PK-12 education majors was discussed. The course would include a field experience correlating to the

content of the course. Some topics to be included would be poverty, diversity, and ESOL as well as other various topics. The sequencing of the course was explored with the following suggestions provided: the first week of the student teaching semester or interim course directly before student teaching. It was emphasized that the course should be secondary specific and closely tied to the professional semester.

A concern was expressed in adding more hours to our students’ programs. It was noted that it does not have to be a 3 hour course. Music has more exposure to classroom management in their courses as it addressed in their multiple Techniques courses. Dr. Smith expressed that there is a need for our students to have exposure to classroom management. In his experiences with area practitioners, it has been stressed that this is the biggest issue in regards to employment.

Steve Brown will add academic supervisors to the 10/WF Professional Semester group in Angel.

The next meeting will be held on December 14 th

at 8:00 a.m. in 126 Hughes Hall. IDL will be set up to allow Terri Swanson to join the meeting from Kansas City.
