Organization Development and Change
Prerequisites
Graduate standing.
Description
A study of contemporary theories, concepts, and practices useful in improving organizational
performance. Special attention is paid to strategic interventions and change in both private and
public sector organizations, and the global business arena. Emphasis will also be placed on ways
to improve the quality of worklife for employees, while enhancing organizations’ alignment with
internal and external environmental conditions.
Student Learning Outcomes:
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
1. Recognize the common characteristics of open or complex systems as they relate to
organization development.
2. Describe the common characteristics of organizational growth and evolution, including
the entrepreneurial, professionalizing, and mature stages of growth.
3. Diagnose organizational problems at the individual, group (including team or unit), and
organization levels of analysis.
4. Recommend solutions to address organizational problems or leverage opportunities by
selecting from among alternative interventions, including human-process, HRM,
technostructural, and strategic interventions, and mature stages of growth.

instructor syllabus for this course, which must also comply with the content specifications outlined in the Troy University Faculty Handbook.
The objectives included on this Master Syllabus must be included among the objectives on the instructor’s syllabus, which may expand upon the
same as the instructor sees fit. The statement of purpose seeks to position the course properly within the curriculum and should be consulted by
faculty as a source of advisement guidance. Specific choice of text and other details are further subject to Course and Program Coordinator
guidance.

7. Summarize motivational theories that reinforce or impede the implementation of
organizational change.
8. Develop a thorough, well-designed plan for implementing an organization
development/change intervention project.
9. Apply organization development and change strategies to business objectives in an apt
scenario using appropriate techniques.
Purpose
To provide basic knowledge of organizational-change principles and interventions in preparation
for the constant change that typifies organizational life. MBA unspecified elective (nonAccounting). MSHRM program requirement.
Student Engagement:
Instructors in this course will add videos, movies, site visits, guest speakers, service learning
projects, or other activities designed to engage students in experiential and active learning
activities designed to improve skills and the application of knowledge within the business
community.
