Management Information Systems
Vision Statement

Prerequisites
If part of the EMBA sequence, EMBA 5501. If part of the MBA sequence, MBA 5505 or
equivalent. Otherwise, graduate standing.
Description
Conceptual and practical foundations of information systems to include support of management
and decision-making functions, computer system project management, economic and legal
considerations of management information systems, and system implementation/evaluation.
Objectives
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
1. Categorize information systems, and identify their appropriate uses.
2. Identify legal, ethical, moral, societal, and security issues with regard to technology.
3. Identify activities and issues involved in the development and implementation of
information systems, including design, development, testing, and operation processes.
4. Identify the hardware and software components of an information system.
5. Identify uses of computer communications and the hardware and software components used
in networks.
6. Recognize, analyze and resolve IS security issues.
Master Syllabi are developed by the senior faculty in each business discipline. This Master Syllabus must be used as the basis for developing the
instructor syllabus for this course, which must also comply with the content specifications outlined in the Troy University Faculty Handbook.
The objectives included on this Master Syllabus must be included among the objectives on the instructor’s syllabus, which may expand upon the
same as the instructor sees fit. The statement of purpose seeks to position the course properly within the curriculum and should be consulted by
faculty as a source of advisement guidance. Specific choice of text and other details are further subject to Program Coordinator guidance.

7. Apply information systems strategies to business objectives in an apt scenario.
Purpose
To provide familiarity with a framework for understanding and managing information systems in
organizations, emphasizing what they are, how they affect an organization and its employees,
and how they can enhance business efficiency, effectiveness, and competitiveness. EMBA core
requirement (non-Accounting). MBA Information Systems option requirement. MSM
Information Systems or Leadership and Organizational Effectiveness concentration requirement.
MBA unspecified elective (non-Accounting). MSHRM elective. This should be the first IS
course taken.
