Discussions:
The Faculty Development Council has been organized to support the goals of the
strategic plan which calls for the following:
•
•
•
•
Recruiting and retaining outstanding faculty
Recognizing and rewarding excellence
Offering high quality mentoring
Development of career opportunities
Discussion ensued about the scope and nature of the Council’s charge particularly
whether the Council should undertake efforts based in a more pragmatic grievanceprotection perspective or in a more strategic planning-driven, climate improvement and
idealistic perspective. Both elements were considered important.
Members agreed that the focus of the Council should be on faculty only, inclusive of all
career stages and both tenure and non-tenure tracks. Members discussed that it was
important to focus on various elements pertinent to the recruitment, advancement and
retention of faculty. It was discussed that compensation of faculty may be beyond the
scope of the Council since it is being extensively addressed by other University
committees.
The members of the Council offered the following items for discussion at future
