Dear Parent, My name is Mrs. Marjorie Carosiello and I will be your son/daughter’s Chemistry teacher this year. I am looking forward to this school year because I want your child to be the best he/she can be. In order to be the best your student must give effort in the classroom and at home. I demand the same from myself. This year is bound to be a success with total effort coming from the student and teacher, along with parental support. I would like communication to flow easily between parent and teacher this year. Please feel free to call me at school (260-5298), if I am not available at that time I will return your call during my planning time (4th block) . I do not mind if you call me at home (261-7242) if that is more convenient for you. Please no phone calls after 9:00 pm. My e-mail address is marjoriecarosiello@anderson5.net. I find email a great way to keep in touch. I check my email several times throughout the school day and will respond to your questions promptly! Your student will be given a weekly assignment sheet in electronic and paper form. This includes class assignments, homework, and labs. While it may need to be modified occasionally (electronic form), I feel this allows your son/daughter to plan ahead. I will also provide an electronic copy of objectives for each chapter, as well as prelabs and labs. This information will be posted on my web page at the Hanna home page. Grade reports are issued at the midterm and at the end of each nine-week grading period. This means that you should see a progress report every four and a half weeks. Please ask me for a grade update in between those times if you desire. We will also have “Power Teacher” that will allow you to see your students grades “live”. I am available should your child feel he/she needs extra help. I arrive at school by 7:50 and will be happy to help your student at that time. Several days a week I arrive much earlier. Arrangements for after school or lunch can be made ahead of time. Homeroom provides another opportunity for tutoring. In addition Power Hour on Monday has a certified chemistry teacher. Please do not hesitate to contact me concerning this or any matter relevant to your student. Again, my planning is fourth block. Please fill out and return the bottom part of this document. Again I look forward to a great school year! Sincerely, Marjorie G. Carosiello Grading Policy for Chemistry (Subject to Change With Upcoming District 9 Week Exams) Tests: 45% Cumulative test material in 1 to 3 chapters. The test will be assigned at least three days in advance(but usually two weeks). If it is an excused absence, the test must be made up after school. Daily: 45% This includes quizzes, labs, and daily grades. Quizzes may be announced or unannounced. They usually cover the previous day’s lesson; may come at the end of a lesson to cover the day’s objectives. Lab reports must be typed or neatly written in ink. I will provide the format for the report. 10 points are deducted for each day that a lab report is late. Exam: 10% Cumulative on the material covered throughout the year. Homework: Each student starts the nine weeks with a 100 for a homework grade. Failure to come to class prepared will result in a 5-point deduction from the homework grade. All assignments must be completed or attempted to receive full credit for the homework. The homework grade is entered as a test grade at the end of the nine weeks. With the exception of an excused absence, homework is not accepted late. A special note on labs; For safety reasons proper lab attire (long pants and closed toe shoes) are required in the chemistry lab. Safety glasses are worn at all times. No exceptions! I will not make up labs after school because of “forgotten” clothing. I have a limited supply of shoes and pants that I can loan rather than your student receiving a zero. Students will always be given ample notice for labs. If they would rather, they certainly can leave a pair of shoes and pants in their locker. Classroom Rules and Polices I believe that I have the very best students at T.L. Hanna High School, and as such my students behave accordingly. I have one classroom rule: Treat others, as you would like to be treated. On the rare occasion that my student do not follow that rule I have the following consequences. Consequences 1. First offense, the student will be warned. 2. Second offense, the student will receive a 30-minute detention, and parental contact. 3. Third and subsequent offenses, the student will receive a referral to the office and an hour after school. 4. Any offense deemed severe enough will be sent to the office immediately. Cut here I have read the policies and rules of Mrs. Carosiello’s class. I agree to abide by them.
