Dear Parent 2014

Dear Parent,

My name is Mrs. Marjorie Carosiello and I will be your son/daughter’s AP Chemistry teacher this year. I am looking forward to this school year because I want your child to be the best he/she can be.

In order to be the best your student must give effort in the classroom and at home. I demand the same from myself. My goal is to help your child learn a great deal of chemistry and be successful on the AP exam in

May. While this is a difficult course requiring dedication, I am very proud to say that my students have routinely had a passing rate at least twenty-five per cent greater than the national average! This year is bound to be a success with total effort coming from the student and teacher, along with parental support.

I would like communication to flow easily between parent and teacher this year. Please feel free to call me at school (260-5298), if I am not available at that time I will return your call during my planning time which is first block. I do not mind if you call me at home (261-7242) if that is more convenient for you. Please no phone calls after 9:00 pm. My e-mail address is marjoriecarosiello@anderson5.net

. I find email a great way to keep in touch. I check my email several times throughout the school day and will respond to your questions promptly!

Your student will be given an assignment sheet. This includes class assignments, homework, and labs for two or more weeks at a time. While it may need to be modified occasionally, I feel this allows your son/daughter to plan ahead. This information will be posted on my web page at the Hanna home page.

In addition links to the College Board course guide for AP Chemistry, are on my webpage. Please have your son/daughter take time to read it at routine intervals throughout the course.

Grade reports are issued at the midterm and at the end of each nine-week grading period. This means that you should see a progress report every four and a half weeks. Please ask me for a grade update in between those times if you desire. We also have “Power Teacher” that will allow you to see your students grades “live”.

I am available should your child feel he/she needs extra help.I arrive at school by 7:45 and will be happy to help your student at that time. Your student is encouraged to call me if they have any homework questions. Homeroom provides another opportunity for tutoring. Please do not hesitate to contact me concerning this or any matter relevant to your student

Please fill out and return the bottom part of this document. Again I look forward to a great school year!

Sincerely,

Marjorie G. Carosiello

Grading Policy for AP Chemistry

Tests: 45% Cumulative test material in 1 to 3 chapters. The test will be assigned at least three days in advance (but usually two weeks). If it is an excused absence, the test must be made up after school.

Daily: 45% This includes quizzes, labs, and daily grades. Quizzes may be announced or unannounced. They usually cover the previous day’s lesson; may come at the end of a lesson to cover the day’s objectives.

Lab reports/abstracts must be typed or neatly written in ink. I will provide the format for the report. 10 points are deducted for each day that a lab report is late.

Exam: 10% Cumulative on the material covered throughout the year.

Homework: This is a college level course and mastery of the material is critical for success. It is my expectation that homework will always be done and students will ask questions

(including calling me at home), come for extra help as needed. I may or may not take up or check homework. I may also give unannounced give quizzes that mirror homework problems.

A special note on labs; For safety reasons proper lab attire (long pants and closed toe shoes) are required in the chemistry lab. Safety glasses are worn at all times. No exceptions! I will not make up labs after school because of “forgotten” clothing. I have a limited supply of shoes and pants that I can loan rather than your student receiving a zero. Students will always be given ample notice for labs. If they would rather, they certainly can leave a pair of shoes and pants in their locker.
