HEALTH SCIENCE (HS) 3 Clinical Study Instructor: Ms. Carol Tamaklo, RN BSN Email: caroltamaklo@anderson5.net Phone (864) 260-4466, ext. 133 Help Hours: by appointment Course Description: Health Science 3 Clinical Study is a course that guides students to make connections from the classroom to the healthcare industry through work-based learning experiences/activities. This course is designed to provide for further development and application of knowledge and skills common to a wide variety of healthcare professions. The students in this course will build on all information and skills presented in previous required course standards. The student will relay these skills into real life experiences. Students in this course should be First-aid & CPR Certified before participation in any healthcare experience outside of the classroom. Under the direction and supervision of a registered nurse, students are prepared to perform nursing-related services to patients and residents in hospitals or long-term care facilities. Students will be eligible to take the certified nurse aide exam upon completion of this course. Standards/ Course Goals: Students are expected to meet the Health Science Standards, as outlined by the South Carolina Department of Education which are based on the National Healthcare Foundation Standards. Students will be expected to score at the proficient level or higher on the National Healthcare Foundation Skills Assessment. Attendance is extremely important in skills classes. 2. Students must complete a minimum of 40 clinical hours to be eligible to take the CNA Certification Exam. 3. It is imperative that student’s text/call instructor if they will be absent for any clinical day (there are no make-up days). 4. In the event the instructor will be absent on a clinical day, student will be notified by text message/phone call. They should then report to their homeschool (location to be determined). Course Fee’s 1. $5.00 AVCC fee due first 2 weeks of school 2. $101. 00 fee to take CNA Exam (payable to NACES & due approx. April 1, 2015) Grading procedures and scale: Student’s grades will be based on a point system. This course is cumulative and includes: 1. Tests 2. Quizzes 3. Projects 4. Skills 5. Classwork 6. Daily grade (based on employment readiness –classroom and clinical) 7. Final Project (skills based demonstration) 8. Extra credit opportunities will be available 9. A 100-93 B 92-85 C 84-77 D 76-70 F 69 and below **Students must have a minimum of 40 clinical hours to take the CNA Examination in April 2015 Late papers, reports and make up work: Late work will receive a reduced grade of 10 points for each day late, up to 3 days past due date. After 3 days, late papers, reports and work will not be accepted, unless special circumstances arise and discussed with teacher ahead of time. If work is missed due to absence, work must be made up within 3days of students return to receive a grade. Work that is not made up will receive no credit. If an assigned project/quiz/test was scheduled prior to the student’s absence, the project/quiz/test will be due on the assigned date or on the 1st day the student returns to class. Be in class and seated when the bell rings. 2. Bring appropriate materials to class (books, pencils, paper…). 3. Always use respectful language and behavior in classroom. 4. Leave the room in a neat and tidy. 5. If you borrow it, return it. 6. NO CELL PHONE (1st offence-hold till end of class, 2nd offence- cell phone will be given to administration). 7. One person leaves the classroom @ a time with a pass. 8. Transition to skills lab/computer lab quietly. 9. Do not touch equipment unless you have been instructed on its proper usage; do not misuse medical equipment. 10. Students are not to be in the hospital beds; respect mannequins and all equipment at all times. Consequences for violation of class rules: 1. Reminder of rules through verbal warning. 2. Private conference with student. 3. Letter and/or call to parents. 4. Referral to school administration. (Teacher may bypass levels to immediate referral dependent on level of rule violation). Lecture: 1. Raise hand to be recognized before speaking. 2. Stay in your seat and sit up during class. No sleeping…KEEP YOUR HEAD UP!! Small group: 1. Stay in your work area and work on your assignments, using inside (very quiet) voices! 2. Raise hand for recognition, when needed. 3. All must contribute to group work to obtain credit. Test taking: 1. Keep your eyes on own paper! 2. Raise hand if you have a question. 3. Place books and papers under your desk. 4. No talking until all test are turned in to the teacher. Substitute teacher: All work done while a substitute is present will be graded. Behavior and studies should reflect the same atmosphere as with the teacher. A note will be given to the teacher by the substitute explaining behavior and lessons upon the return of the teacher. Actions will be awarded or punished accordingly. Reflective Journals: Students will be required to keep a journal, which will be “graded”. Journal entries will be made in class unless otherwise instructed. Each student is expected to begin their journal promptly at the bell. All journals are to be left in the classroom. It is up to each student to keep up with their journals and complete them prior to lecture/skills. Final Exam: Instead of taking a traditional, written final exam, students will create a skills demonstration video with a partner(s).
