Narrative Summary Interview with Miki Collier by Marquita Logan On April 22, 2015, I interviewed Miki Collier at Metamorphosis Outreach Empowerment Center at 811 East Division Street, which she’s the pastor of. I met Pastor Collier in November of 2014 where I attended her church to sing on a Sunday afternoon. When I first encountered her, I knew right away I was in the presence of a great leader and a great woman. Miki is actually my pastor here in Springfield, I joined her church at the beginning of this year. I knew that being under her leadership would have a great impact on my life. I chose to interview Pastor Miki not just because I had to for this project, but I really wanted to get to know more about her life honestly, so this project was my excuse to do so. When I first asked her, she thought it was going to be just a few questions, but once I began to read the consent form and pull out the recorder, her exact word was, “Oh, this is serious”. And we laughed about it for a while. I knew from that moment I chose the right women for this project. Miki Collier was born on July 9, 1969 in Kansas City, Missouri to her parents Mr. & Mrs. Brown. Miki shared with me that as a child she grew up in church, but was never really active in church. At the age of 15, Miki had her first experience with God where she actually experience the Holy Ghost and it was the talk of the town. She was ready to help others learn about the word of God. Miki told me that her mother didn’t influence her in her spiritual walk, but her mother’s drive to help others that were in need inspired her to want to help the community someway. When she was a senior in high school, she knew there was a calling on her life, she didn’t think it would be preaching over a congregation of people, she just knew it was to teach the word of God. However, she said that a year later all of that didn’t matter because she became rebellious and did what she wanted. She said there were many times when God revealed her calling to her, but she was afraid of becoming a leader. Nevertheless, she accepted her calling to preach. Miki Collier graduated with her high school diploma and went to Lincoln University where she received her Associates. After receiving her Associates she went to a Christian Seminary school. I remember her saying in church one Sunday, that she loves to collect all her sermons and keep them shelved in her office, it just reminds her of what God is doing in her life. Pastor Miki really began her ministry in 2005 where she began preaching the word of God. She lived in Europe for 6 years and went Belize for mission work. Miki has many mentors she looks up to. She did mentioned that Bishop T.D. Jakes is one of her mentors, she loves listening to his sermons. I asked Pastor Miki about how she’s treated as woman who’s a pastor. She told me that at times when she goes to conferences and they would asked for the all the men pastors to stand to be recognize, but they would never acknowledge the women. She has received rejection from her own family who believes a woman should not lead. She said she has been in the same room with men that were preachers and they would elude the conversation about the word of God as if she was not capable or anointed enough to understand. She honestly didn’t let none of these things affect how she function as a woman who’s a pastor. Despite the treatment she has received as a women she knows that she can be a pastor who is capable of leading people and teaching them about God. The things I discovered about Miki Collier that was interesting, intriguing, and inspiring. One she is a mother of three children. I say this because she sets a great example for her children to be whatever God has called them to be. I also love the fact her children are involved with her in ministry. I think this is important because as a child Miki was not involved in church so she makes sure her children are. Miki Collier is also a wife who partners with her husband in everything. They are both pastors, entrepreneurs, and restaurateurs. When I see these two together it’s inspiring to know she has someone who understands and support he every move. She also own her own business, a restaurant, Southern Spice Cafe in St. Roberts, Missouri. That is very interesting to me since I hope one day I can own my own restaurant with my mother. One thing that was really inspiring to me about Miki Collier was the fact she’s a Pastor of her own church. I love her drive to teach others about life and God, how to handle money because she’s also an entrepreneur and she loves helping others. She inspired me to follow my own calling in the ministry because I fear as woman to face the rejection, but she shows me otherwise. I love the fact she doesn’t allow what others think about her as a woman affect her as a pastor. She uses those typical ideas of what think or say about her as a steeping to stool. I applaud Miki Collier for being a leader, a hard worker, a mother, a friend, a smile, a hug, a child of God, and most importantly a woman.
