CALL TO ORDER Kevin Pybas called the meeting to order at 3:33 in Plaster Student Union room 317 New members and visitors were introduced and welcomed. II. OLD BUSINESS Approval of the Minutes Christina moved for acceptance of the minutes from the April 7 2010 meeting. Mario Daoust seconded. Minutes approved as distributed. Public Affairs Intensive Experience Dr. Catau noted that Faculty Senate passed a resolution at one of the March meetings to have each program identify Public Affairs experiences that majors must complete. CGEIP was charged to identify the criteria. Each College Council will be responsible for overseeing the area. Dr. Catau and Dr. Pybas will submit a proposal to the Committee at the September 8th meeting. Subcommittee Report Review of MUS 239 Mario Daoust presented the subcommittees report for MUS 239. Dr. Daoust reported that MUS 239 has been submitted 3 times and the course appears to be more in line with Culture and Society. He further reported that improvements are indicated in the current submission but certain issues need to be addressed. The subcommittee recommends the portfolio be resubmitted early in fall 2010. It is critical that the next portfolio address issues outlined in the subcommittee report. Dr. Prescott responded that this course has been listed in the Self-Understanding of Gen Ed since 1996. Accreditation requires a world music course. Having the course included under Self-Understanding allows an overlap of 6 hours. Changing the course to Culture and Society will add 3 hours to the degree. A motion to approve the subcommittee’s recommendation was moved by Christina Simmers and seconded by Mike Foster. None opposed, motion passed. III. NEW BUSINESS Election of CGEIP Chair Nominations were requested for a new CGEIP Chair. Kevin Pybas Nominated Mike Foster. No additional nominations were forwarded. Mike Foster accepted. Then nomination was unanimously approved. Curricular Proposal New Course Proposal: CHM 161: General Chemistry I Laboratory. 1(0-2) F, S. Prerequisite: CHM 160 or concurrent enrollment. Course Change General Education: CHM 160, General Chemistry I 4 (4-0) F, S. Description change to reflect the addition of a General Chemistry I Laboratory (CHM 161). Program Change: General Education: Chemistry: addition of a Laboratory option (CHM 161) for the Natural World Area of Inquiry. Mark Richter gave a brief overview of the changes requested. The lab will be available in both 1st and 2nd semesters. Students will learn the material with the lecture The change will allow maximum flexibility for other areas of study that do not require a 4 credit hour class and students who would like to only take the lab. Dr. Catau noted that having the course divided from CHM 160 would better serve transfer students who need one hour to satisfy the Natural World area of General Education. Joshua Smith moved to approve the changes to CHM 161, CHM 160 and the Program change as a block. Christina Simmers Seconded. None opposed, motion passed. Program Change: Native American Studies: Delete ANT 425. Christina Simmers moved to accept the change. Mario Daoust seconded. Motion passed unopposed. Program Change: Law and Society Minor: add PHI 341, allows students and option to take PHI 341 instead of PSY 340 to fulfill the second core course requirement. Christina Simmers moved to accept the change. Ed Chang seconded. Motion passed unopposed. Program Change: Latin American Studies: Delete SPN 315 and SPN 360. Judith Martin explained that the course numbers do not exist. A new submission is needed. Judith Martin moved to table the item. David Mitchell seconded. Motion passed. Program Change: Gender Studies: Delete GST 326, Course has not been offered in several years. Christina Simmers moved to accept the change. David Byrd seconded. Motion passed unopposed. IV.
