UW‐Green Bay Retiree Association Board of Directors Meeting MINUTES Tuesday, May 10, 2011 Attendance Jim Wiersma (president), Mike Murphy, Mark Brunette, Barbara McClure-Lukens, Sally Mancoske, Pat Przybelski Excused: Betty Baer, Ken Fleurant, Chuck Rhyner, Marge Weidner The meeting was called to order at 9 a.m. Approval of Minutes The minutes of April 12, 2011, were approved with two minor changes. Scholarship Status and Future Awards We have not been able to give away the $700 scholarship this year (typically $350/year, but we did not give out a scholarship last year). Mike Murphy shared some of his thoughts on why. The Financial Aid office indicated they could administer the scholarship for us, but we first need a “gift instrument.” Students would fill out an application and then depending upon how the student completes the form, Financial Aid would assign the scholarship. Some criteria discussed was a GPA of 2.5 (good academic standing), a sophomore, a full-time student (12 credits or more), with preference to need base. We will continue developing criteria for eligibility at our next meeting. The scholarship recipient would be invited to the scholarship reception and to our annual retiree banquet. We would post the student’s name and a short bio on our website. Mark Brunette Updates — The University officially has its own foundation. It is chartered as the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Foundation. UW-Green Bay is the last of the four-year comprehensives to establish its own foundation. Current financial resources have been held and invested by the UW Foundation in Madison. The establishment of our own foundation gives the University greater flexibility in receiving stocks, property and other non-cash gifts. It also allows the University to create limited corporations purchasing property and other financial transactions. Current endowed funds will most likely remain with the UW Foundation. It is being determined what resources will be received and retained with the new foundation. — Mark will update the RA website with the names of contacts that can be called with questions about any of the three monthly retiree breakfasts. — Campus clean-up day was April 15. A total of 26 participants, including Jim Wiersma, took in the fresh air and exercise. — The formal dedication of the Sue Keihn Living and Learning Center was held April 26 at the main entrance to Pamperin Hall. — The dedication of the Ganga V.M. Nair Research Laboratory was held in the Laboratory Sciences Building May 6. — Work on the Wood Hall remodel is scheduled for completion at the end of June early July. — We will continue to meet at Lambeau Cottage until our RA office is completed sometime in 2012. Banquet Interest Survey The Service Committee needs ideas and people to participate on the committee. We will have an interest survey available at the Retiree Association Banquet October 18. Jim will work on this for discussion at the June meeting. We discussed having the formal meeting held from 5-5:30, with cocktails and dinner to follow, so that people that only want to socialize can come after the meeting. Jim will also contact the music department to ask if any students would like to perform during the social hour. Question: Do we want to include in the invitation a handout summarizing what our committee has been involved in to date, and include information about the RA Scholarship? New Business — Pat Przybelski will contact the HR office to find out how we can get e-mail addresses for the new retirees. — We need further discussion on an “associate membership” for spouses of those retirees that have passed away. Some spouses wish to continue to be invited to social gatherings while others do not. We will need a separate record for this membership. — We will ask Ken to include two items to every e-mail he sends to the listserve. 1) a link to our website, making it easy to check out what is new, and 2) the question: Have you moved? Please send updates to Mark Brunette at Brunettm@uwgb.edu — June 6 will be the next campus photo identification meeting with Deb Anderson. — Our Retiree Association Benefit Golf outing is scheduled for August 26. Cost is $45 with a power cart or $37 without, to include a picnic-style buffet dinner, awards, raffle and door prizes. Mark distributed a copy of the signup sheet for committee approval. There was one addition made. Nice job, Mark. The meeting adjourned at 10 a.m. so that we could join the arboretum walk at 10:30 a.m. Our next meeting will be held June, 14, 2011, at 9 a.m. in the Lambeau Cottage. We will not meet in July.
