17TH Annual Invitational Summer Institute
For teachers of all subjects and at all grade levels, PreK-University
Held on the campus of Cal State LA
June 13th - July 8th, 2016

9:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
The Los Angeles Writing Project Summer Institute is a combined think-tank and writers’
workshop, exploring theoretical and practical issues in the teaching of writing and critical
literacy. Participants are outstanding classroom teachers from Los Angeles schools and colleges
and a distinguished staff of resident and visiting researchers, teachers, and writers.
The Los Angeles Writing Project (LAWP) at Cal State LA, is a site of the
National Writing Project.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE
HOW TO APPLY
With your application please include the following items: 1) this Fellowship application form, 2)
a personal statement (see Fellowship application form), and 3) a signed statement of support (for
K-12 teachers only) from an administrator at your teaching site.
APPLICATION REVIEW PROCESS
1. Applications will be reviewed by a selection committee.
2. In selecting new Fellows, the selection committee will strive for a balanced distribution of
teachers from different grade levels (PreK-College), subject-area disciplines, and
geographical regions.
3. The application process will normally include an interview as a final step prior to the
Fellowship appointment.
4. Fellows are expected to attend a one-day orientation meeting at Cal State LA several weeks
before the opening of the Institute and to attend two all-day meetings during the academic
year following the Institute.
APPLICATION TIMELINE
1. Applications will be reviewed starting March. Early applications receive priority
consideration.
2. Interviews will begin in March.
3. Applicants will be notified of Fellowship awards by April.
FELLOWSHIP STIPENDS
Teachers receive a Fellowship stipend of $ 1,000.00 for participation in the Summer Institute and
follow-up program.
ACADEMIC CREDIT
For Fellows who wish to receive academic credit for their participation in the Institute, units of
credit will be awarded through Cal State LA Continuing Education Division at a per-unit cost.

describe teaching approaches they encourage or strategies for encouraging effective literacy
instruction in a school or district.
