Final Year Long Case
Students failing their OSCE will be required to sit a Final Year Long Case with an extern examiner. The examination will
have the same format as the Residence Year Long Case except that both examiners will be physicians and the examination
will also include a discussion of the treatment of medical emergencies.
Final Year Oral Examination
Candidates will have an oral examination in the following situations, namely if their combined theory and clinical mark is:
<50% (<80/160 marks) – candidates will be required to attend a pass/fail oral. Candidates deemed to have passed the exam
will be awarded a total final medical examination mark of 50% (100/200 marks).
<60% - the external examiners will select those candidates for second class honours orals. These selected candidates will be
invited to attend an honours oral. Candidates deemed to have attained honours standard in the viva will be awarded a total
of 60% (120/200). Candidates not attaining honours standard will receive a computed mark on the basis of their
performance in the theory and clinical components, as below.
<70% - the external examiners will select those candidates for first class honours orals. These selected candidates will be
invited to attend a first class honours oral: candidates deemed to have attained first class honours standard may receive a
maximum of 40 marks. Candidates not attaining first class honours standard will receive a computed mark on the basis of
their performance in the theory and clinical components as below.
Candidates who after their OSCE have achieved a total score of 50% (pass) or 60% (honours) will not be invited to
attend an oral as they have passed or have achieved low/medium range second class honours, respectively. These
candidates will receive a computed viva mark on the basis of their performance in the theory and clinical components.
Candidates who after their OSCE have achieved a total score 70% will be invited to attend a first class honours viva.
Examiners in orals may not award marks less than the computed mark to students invited to attend, i.e. candidates may not
be disadvantaged by attending the oral examination.

In subjects including both written and practical examinations, a candidate may be rejected on the grounds of extreme
weakness in one or other part of the examination, in which case a pass mark for the subject will not be granted.

Compensation between subjects shall not be permitted.
Exemptions
A candidate who has obtained a pass mark in a subject shall be exempted from further examination in that subject.
In the MB, BCh, BAO Degree examination an exemption will normally be held for a period of two years. A candidate who
achieves a sufficient standard in the written, clinical and MCQ parts of the examination in either Medicine or Surgery or

MDMXP0032 MASTER OF SCIENCE IN CHILD HEALTH (MSc)
General Regulations
The course contains six components, four core modules, a service and clinical attachment module and a thesis. Marks will
be awarded for the overall performance of the student in each individual component. Each component of the course can be
passed separately. Students must present for assessment of each component by the end of the semester in which that
component finishes, unless special circumstances arise.
Exemption
If a student has completed a module or a degree in a recognised university that contains substantially the same content as
one of the four core modules he or she may apply for an exemption from the module. Students may not apply for an
exemption from the service and clinical attachment module, nor from the thesis.
Applications for an exemption must be made at the latest two months before the start of the Academic term in which the
module is scheduled to start. Students are required to : specify the module from which they seek an exemption
 specify the course or courses on the basis of which they make this claim
 provide an academic transcript
172

explain why thy feel that they should be exempted
Decisions on exemption will be made by the course committee and notified to the student before the module starts.
Credits
Each module in the course will have ECTS credits available. Students may achieve credit for components of this course as
follows:Satisfactory completion of one or more of the four core modules
certificate (one for each module) stating this.
Satisfactory completion of four core modules and the service and clinical attachment module
Award of a Higher Diploma in Child Health
Satisfaction of the requirements for the Higher Diploma in Child Health, and submission of a satisfactory thesis
and satisfactory completion of the presentation of the thesis material specified below
Award of a Master of Science in Child Health.
Completion of requirements
Students will ordinarily complete all of the exercises required for their award within two academic years of starting the
program.
Students may also apply to take the course over three years, taking two core modules in the first year, two in the second,
and the service and clinical attachments module in the third, together with a thesis and related exercises.
All students must satisfactorily complete all of the required exercises within four academic years of their starting on the
programme. This regulation will only be waived on special application, and if satisfactory documentary evidence of the
reasons for this is made available.
Repeating of assessments
Students who fail to achieve credit for one of the four core modules, but are successful in the other three, may repeat this
module in the second year of their degree with the permission of the Course Director, and if timetabling and resource
constraints permit.
Otherwise students who fail to complete one, or more, of the four first year modules must repeat the module, or modules,
that they have failed, in the following academic year, and may not proceed to the second year of the programme unless they
are successful.
Students who fail part of the requirements for any module must present the entire assessment for that module when
repeating it.
Compensation
Compensation between modules is not permitted.

This module counts as two modules, and receives twice the marks of the core modules. Assessment is based on a portfolio
of reports delivered at agreed times during the two semesters. These reports will have two components – a group report on
the service being visited, and on the issues which the service providers have asked the students to consider, and an
individual report from each student placing their visit and observations in their own professional context. Students will be
required to present their reports to the whole group and, in many cases, to the staff of the services in which the attachments

Examination in the case of Psychiatry), may be exempted, at the discretion of the examiners, from taking an oral

Ruling regarding the application of the award of a mark of ‘35’ in the Final Clinical Examinations
In the case of a student who achieves the following clinical marks:
Long Case
35
Short Case
50 and above
or
Long Case
50 and above
Short Case
35
He/she will receive a Third Clinical Examination by another Pair of Examiners in the clinical in which the ‘35’ mark was
granted, i.e. either the Long Case or Short Case(s). An external Examiner must be part of the re-examining team and
neither of the examining pair will have previously have examined the student.
If the student achieves a mark of 50% or higher, in the third clinical, he/she will then receive an additional Oral
examination by one of the Clinical Professors and an External Examiner. If the student fails the Oral examination, he/she
will be deemed to have Failed the examination overall.
235
FINAL PROFESSIONAL EXAMINATION
Honours standard
Honours (First Class and Second Class) may be awarded separately in each of the subjects of the Final Professional
Examination, i.e. (a) Medicine & Surgery, (b) Obstetrics & Gynaecology, (c) Psychiatry and (d) Paediatrics.
First Class Honours
First Class Honours may be awarded in any subject to candidates who obtain 70% or over in that subject.
Second Class Honours
Second Class Honours may be awarded in any subject to candidates who obtain 60% or over in that subject.
Honours Degree
For the award of an Honours Degree, honours must be obtained in the aggregate marks of the subjects Medicine/Surgery,
Obstetrics/Gynaecology, Psychiatry and Paediatrics.
A First Class Honours Degree may be awarded to candidates who obtain 70% or over, no subject to fall below 60% for
First Class Honours.
A Second Class Honours Degree may be awarded to candidates who obtain between 60 and 69%. No subjects to fall
below 55% for Second Class Honours.
Note: Candidates who fail one or more of the degree subjects are not eligible for the award of an honours degree.
If the total marks in the subjects Medicine/Surgery, Obstetrics/Gynaecology, Psychiatry and Paediatrics so computed do
not warrant the award of First or Second Class Honours Degrees, the candidate will be awarded a Pass Degree,
notwithstanding the fact that Honours are awarded in a separate subject or subjects.
