Notice to Potential Employees Regarding Group Health Insurance Coverage Each person shall have 31 days from the first day of employment in a benefits eligible position with Pittsburg State University to elect or waive State Employee Health Plan coverage. Coverage will be effective the first day of the month following completion of a 30 day waiting period starting from the first day of employment in a benefits eligible position. If a new employee misses this deadline, the next opportunity to elect coverage will be during the annual Open Enrollment period held in October of each year with coverage effective January 1 of the following year. Waiver of the Waiting Period Under certain circumstances, the 30 day waiting period may be waived under the provisions of K.A.R. 108-1-1. Following are the circumstances in which the 30 day waiting period may be waived. 1. The potential new employee is not entitled to continuation of health benefits under either Public Law 99-272, the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA), as amended, or state continuation of coverage laws, K.S.A. 40-2209 and K.S.A. 40-3209 and amendments thereto, and is not covered by or eligible to be covered by another health insurance plan; 2. The potential new employee is required to have health insurance as a condition of obtaining a work visa for employment in the United States. The State Employee Health Plan defines a potential employee as one that has not yet been on the job in pay status. Employees must contact HRS (620-235-4191) prior to their first day of employment if they believe they may be eligible for the Waiver of the Waiting Period for coverage in the State Employee Health Plan. d:\401288262.doc (7/1/16)
