This qualification is for 14–18-year-olds, but could be taken by a broad range of students. It is carefully designed to be inclusive, and to motivate and interest all students by offering a varied History course and by creating a closer relationship between school/college, history and the wider world. What will the student study as part of this qualification? All students will study four topics. All students will study one topic on Medieval History, where there is a choice of which option to teach: • Option 1 Raiders and Invaders – students learn about the Saxons, Vikings and Normans • Option 2 Power and Control – students learn about four medieval rulers: King John, Edward I, Owain Glyndwr and Henry V. All students will study two topics out of the following five: • Local History Investigation – students examine the significance of a local site, person, or event in the past and its/their current relevance to the local community • International History – students examine an event, issue or development of international significance • Whose History? Presenting the Past – students investigate the ways in which a historical event or issue is portrayed across the media and analyse these interpretations of the past • Change over Time – students examine the process, nature and extent of change over a period of approximately 100 years • A Society in Depth – students cover the key features, people and events of the chosen society over about 30–50 years. All students will then do one further topic from the choice below: • Heritage Management or Heritage Marketing – students who choose Heritage Management will investigate issues related to conserving and preserving a historic site; students who choose Heritage Marketing will plan the marketing of some aspect of British History and produce samples of marketing materials • Multimedia in History: Bringing the Past to Life – students investigate how ICT can help make the study of the past enjoyable to a range of different audiences • Missing pages: the Migrant Experience – students investigate the motives and experiences of a specific group of migrants in the 19th or 20th century • An Archaeological Enquiry – students examine a historical issue that uses archaeological techniques. What knowledge and skills will the student develop as part of this qualification and how might these be of use and value in further studies? Depending on the topics chosen a student will develop and/or reinforce a range of other skills and knowledge, including: • historical enquiry skills • learning the role that History plays in vocational areas • developing a personal sense of identity, and gaining an understanding and respect for the diversity of human experience, whether cultural, economic, social, political, moral, ethnic or religious • planning, problem solving and presenting • ICT skills • how to evaluate multimedia products • how to communicate results appropriately to different audiences and for different purposes. Applied History lays the foundations for the further study of History at Advanced Level and beyond and helps candidates to see and experience the relevance of the subject to a range of occupations, particularly those in the expanding heritage sector. Which subjects will complement this course? The Level 1/2 Certificate in Applied History is equivalent in size to a GCSE and will take 120–140 guided learning hours to deliver. The qualification is complemented by a wide range of GCSEs, including English, Business, Geography, Art and Design, and Computer Science. The qualification is designed with both creative and practical elements which complement creative subjects such as English or Art and Design and more practical subjects such as Business, where ICT, presentation and evaluation skills may be used.
