Activity 1
The topic of abuse may cause learners to feel distressed or disclose that they have been or
are being abused. Tutors will need to act sensitively in these situations and follow their work
setting’s procedures for any disclosures of abuse that are made.
Ask learners to read through the news article about Steven Hoskin and draw their attention
to the three questions that they will need to respond to. Explain that the purpose of this
activity is for learners to show their understanding of:




How to identify different types of abuse
How more than one type of abuse can occur at the same time.
The factors that can make an individual more vulnerable to abuse.
Approaches and strategies that can be used to minimise the risk of abuse.
Ask learners to include as much detail as possible in their responses to the questions that
follow the article.
