The awards are intended to underline the College of Social Science and Law and University’s commitment to research excellence. The overall aim is to attract applicants of the highest academic standards to participate in and expand School-based structured PhD programmes in the College of Social Sciences and Law (CSSL); 2. All applicants (EU and non-EU) will be considered; 3. The total value of the scholarship will be equivalent to the EU fee rate for the relevant School to which an application is being made. Scholarships will be awarded for a period up to four academic years; 4. Successful scholars may be required to undertake teaching duties (tutorials/ demonstrating etc.) as fulfilment of the Scholarship requirements. This will not exceed 9 hours per week and is only applicable during teaching semesters (1 and 2) of any academic year; 5. The scholarship cannot be combined with any other scholarship; 6. Existing PhD students are not eligible for the scholarship award; 7. GUIDELINES FOR EVALUATION OF APPLICATIONS Applications will be evaluated by an Assessment Committee appointed by the Head of School, and will normally comprise: the Head of the School of Sociology or their nominee, PhD Coordinator, Masters Coordinator, Tutor Coordinator, and another member of the School of Sociology or a cognate discipline. Applicants will be evaluated by each of the panel members independently under each of the following criteria: (1) their academic record; (2) the coherence and social relevance of their research topic; and (3) their personal statement, including particular achievements, or other relevant factors.
