Catalog Description and Credit Hours of Course: Expanded research with emphasis on building a body of refined self-directed artwork in intaglio, screenprinting or lithography. 3 credit hours. II. Prerequisite: AR401 Intermediate Printmaking III. Purposes or Objectives of the Course: A. To enable students to continue to develop competency in one or more printmaking areas B. To integrate contemporary artistic approaches with historic printmaking processes C. To become conversant with how the chosen area of lithography, intaglio or screenprinting practice merges with the other printmaking processes D. To gain competency in the use of photo emulsions and other photo and digitally based processes E. To demonstrate an understanding of color theory while planning color sequencing and registration F. To understand how printmaking crosses other art media including photography, digital imaging, fibers, sculpture and painting G. To create inventive, visually and conceptually challenging works of art IV. Expectations of Students: A. B. C. D. E. F. Attend class and participate in class discussions Read assigned materials Participation in all class demonstrations and critiques Complete all assignments according to guidelines and due dates Employ safety and good health practices For every hour in class, a minimum of one to two hours of outside class work required G. Participate in basic studio maintenance with care of tools and equipment H. Complete a printmaking journal I. Presentation of a comprehensive portfolio that represents evidence of breadth in the technical aptitude of process as well as depth in conceptual motivation with each successive print V. Course Content or Outline (Indicate number of class hours per unit or section): A. Evaluation will be based on participation during class discussions, studio participation, studio assignments and formal class presentations throughout the semester. B. Course Outline: a. Unit 1 – (3 hrs) – Introduction, safety, and overview. b. Unit 2 – (6 hrs) – Individual student research presentations on chosen theme within the emphasis of intaglio, lithography, and/or screenprinting. Includes presentation of semester’s project, scope and research plan. Mixed-Media approach encouraged. c. Unit 3 – (6 hrs) – Presentations and discussions on contemporary printmaking, emphasizing mixed-media approaches. d. Unit 4 – (12 hrs) – Presentation and demonstrations on refinements in printing procedures for chosen technique(s), layered printing, color printing and registration techniques, photo and digital processes. e. Unit 5 – (42 hrs) – Work on approved printmaking project within the overview and research previously presented and agreed upon with instructor. f. Unit 6 – (6 hrs) – Periodic presentations of technical results from projects and research. g. Unit 7 – (3 hrs) – Discussion of presentation and exhibition of print projects. h. Unit 8 – (6 hrs) – Studio maintenance. i. Unit 9 – (12 hrs) – Interim critiques and final critique of the complete body of work from the semester. VI. Textbook(s) and Materials or Equipment: A.
