Southeast Missouri State University Course Syllabus Department of Art Intermediate Printmaking AR401 New I. Catalog Description and Credit Hours of Course: Continuing work in intaglio, screenprinting or lithography printmaking. 3 credit hours. II. Prerequisite: AR302, 303, 501, or 502 III. Purposes or Objectives of the Course: A. To enable students to develop competency in one or more printmaking areas B. To understand the unique position of their chosen technique(s) in the contemporary art world C. To gain competency in the use of registration techniques and color printing D. To develop personal expression within a consistent body of original prints IV. Expectations of Students: A. Attend class and participate in class discussions B. For every hour in class, a minimum of one to two hours of outside class work required C. Read assigned materials D. Participation in all class demonstrations and critiques E. Complete all assignments according to guidelines and due dates F. Employ safety and good health practices G. Participate in basic studio maintenance with care of tools and equipment H. Complete a printmaking journal V. Course Content or Outline (Indicate number of class hours per unit or section): A. Evaluation will be based on participation during class discussions, studio participation, studio assignments and formal class presentations throughout the semester. B. Course Outline: a. Unit 1 – (3 hrs) – Introduction, safety, and overview. b. Unit 2 – (6 hrs) – Individual student research presentations on chosen theme within the emphasis of intaglio, lithography, or screenprinting. Includes presentation of semester’s project, scope and research plan. c. Unit 3 – (6 hrs) – Presentations and discussions of historical and contemporary printmaking. d. Unit 4 – (12 hrs) – Reacquainting students with correct printing procedures for chosen technique(s). Demonstrations and practice in layered printing, color printing and registration techniques. e. Unit 5 – (42 hrs) – Work on approved printmaking project within the overview and research previously presented and agreed upon with instructor. f. Unit 6 – (6 hrs) – Presentations of technical results from research and editioning. g. Unit 7 – (3 hrs) – Presentation and care of original fine art prints. h. Unit 8 – (6 hrs) – Studio maintenance. i. Unit 9 – (12 hrs) – Interim and final critiques. VI. Textbook(s) and Materials or Equipment: A.
