Sculpture IV: Advanced Sculpture

Catalog Description and Credit Hours of Course:
This course focuses on expanded research and the creation of self-directed
sculptural artwork. Emphasis on building a body of refined artwork, manipulation
of sculptural and exhibition space, and exhibition of artwork.
3 credit hours
II.
Prerequisite (s):
AR 001, AR 332, AR 425, AR 431 or consent of instructor.
III.
Purposes or Objective of the Course:
A. To focus creative work through self-directed, individual projects.
B. To begin developing specialized skills relating to personal material interests.
C. To explore the professional practice of exhibiting artwork in venues outside
of the university.
D. To begin a relationship with a wider art community through exhibition of
artwork.
E. To continue building sculpture studio competency with an emphasis on studio
maintenance, safety, and proper tool usage.
F. To explore the creative possibilities formally and conceptually within the
discipline of sculpture as it pertains to personal artistic goals.
G. To explore historical, contemporary, cultural, and contextual applications of
sculpture media and exhibition of sculpture.
H. To challenge the student’s creative insights and skills through individual and
group critiques.
IV. Expectations of Students:
A. Attend all demonstrations and critical assessments of creative projects.
B. Read all assigned readings.
C. Demonstrate the ability to research: complete all written and oral research
reports.
D. Complete all creative projects according to guidelines by due date.
E. Produce original work through a process of material exploration and creative
problem solving.
F. Participate in the collaborative and collective learning environment of the
sculpture studio.
G. Create artwork at an advanced level.
V. Course Content or Outline (Indicate number of class hours per unit or section):
A. Evaluation will be based on participation during class discussions, written
papers, and completed projects.
B. Course Units – 96 total studio contact hours
a. Unit 1 – (16 hrs) – Independent Research on Exhibition Opportunities
b. Unit 2 – (70 hrs) - Independent Research and Completion of Artwork
c. Unit 3 – (10 hrs) – Installation of artwork

C. It is expected that the students will need to purchase an estimated minimum of
$60 in supplies (metal, wood, and materials and consumables).
