Metz Elementary School Department of Instructional Technology Metz Elementary School Instructional Technology Implementation Plan 2008-2009 The Campus Technology Committee has developed this Technology Plan. It is aligned with the Austin ISD Technology Plan and the State Long Range Plan for Technology. The campus strategies focus on goals and objectives related to Teaching and Learning and Educator Staff Development. Students need to attain practical mastery of word processing. Teaching Practices Teachers need to make daily efforts to find relevant websites pertaining to current areas of study in the classroom. In developing lesson plans for core subjects, teachers need to include specific printable or web-based projects to be completed using technology. Lesson summaries or student products from every classroom need to be displayed in the computer lab and refreshed frequently. Class time in the lab should focus on explicit instruction and student products, while student work that can be done more or less independently— such as keyboarding practice, Learning.com, and math-fact drills on the Internet — should be assigned primarily in the classroom. From PreK through 5th grade, teachers need to teach word processing skills and conventions — appropriately but explicitly. Teachers at all grade levels need to devote more time to teaching research skills. Infrastructure. While infrastructure is the school’s technological strong suit, the computer stock is shrinking at an alarming pace, while some of the equipment is spread too thin (TVs, for example) or is unavailable altogether (DVD players). There is also a need for new-generation language arts software. With teachers on campus reporting fewer than nine hours of tech-related professional development a year — and able to demonstrate only two to three of the SBEC Technology Applications Standards — educator preparation has to be a major focus of the school’s technology program in 2008-2009. Many Metz teachers have not completed larger-scale projects during the 2007-08 school year. Next year's staff development training should address viable projects for various grade levels. This training should be teacher-led. Future Vision and Direction With the goal of having its students meet or exceed AISD’s 5th-grade technology application competencies on entry into middle school, this is how Metz Elementary School’s technology program should look by school year 2009-2010: • Metz provides sufficient staffing and other resources to maintain its status on areas of the annual STaR Chart assessment currently rated “advanced” or “target.” • Metz provides sufficient staffing and other resources to enable the school to raise its STaR Chart ratings in those areas currently described as “early” or “developing.” • Metz earmarks appropriate sums in the campus budget each year for hardware replacement, software acquisition, online subscriptions, and similar technology resources. • All Metz teachers provide students with direct, whole-class technology instruction, while integrating technology into instruction in all core content areas. • Metz teachers are knowledgeable of the school district’s technology IPGs for their respective grade levels and succeed in implementing them. • Metz teachers are skilled in the use of campus multimedia equipment, including computer projectors, digital cameras, camcorders, scanners and CD/DVD burners. • In managing student computer time in both the classroom and computer lab, teachers strike an appropriate balance between (1) technology instruction and (2) applying technology skills to creation of curriculum-related computer products. • Teachers manage students’ computer time wisely — unsupervised, non-instructional “free time” is discouraged in both the classroom and computer lab. • Scores on the year-end 5th-grade technology literacy assessment are at or above the AISD average.
