The district wireless initiative has made has increased access on campus, but the school lack the computers to take advantage of this improvement. The two COW sets are beginning to reach their end-of-life and some arrangement will need to be made to replace and/or upgrade them. Printer access across the campus has improved, but there is still much waste as they are frequently used in lieu of copy machines. Students and staff alike will benefit from training to reduce wasted paper and toner. Classroom connections and electricity are not always located in areas convenient to efficient classroom organization. Many times extra long cables must be used to allow teachers to configure their classroom to suit the students’ needs. Often computers are not plugged in to the designated electrical outlets because of this problem. The student to computer ration has improved, but increasing the technology allocation by the state and/or district is really the only way to improve this situation further. The technology committee will be evaluating computer allocation to ensure an equitable and efficient distribution of equipment. The computer lab has up-to-date equipment, but the layout and environment could be improved. Many classroom computers have been refreshed, but there are still cases where students’ only access is through outdated Macintosh computers. Graham Campus Tech Plan 2008-2009 3 of 17 J. Walter Graham Elementary Department of Instructional Technology Staff Development Needs Our needs have changed very little from last year. We have made progress in many areas, but with changing districta nd state demands, teachers leaving or transferring, and the constant influx and departure of students, Graham still has far to go. Graham is still in need of more structured staff development regarding technology. We need to move from using technology as an ancillary to other curriculum areas and make it an integral part of each area. Teachers across the board would benefit from more training and familiarity with district resources already in place. Systematic analysis of student use and mastery of technology to the same degree that we track data for math, reading, etc. will help target areas for additional instruction. The plan for Graham should include professional development opportunities, participation in budget allocation, and technical support to keep our machines up and running. Leadership and support from district and campus administration will encourage all stakeholders to take ownership of Graham’s Instructional Technology Implementation Plan. Future Vision and Direction First and foremost, technology should represent a tool and a resource. Graham must make good use of its technology infrastructure so that students increase their mastery of technology to meet or exceed district averages. All members of the Graham community will profit from increased training and awareness of ways to use technology to further educational goals. As staff becomes more proficient in understanding the safety, legal, and educational aspects of campus technology, students will invariably become more proficient in their use and care of this valuable resource. If district and/or state sources are not able to increase infrastructure on campus, then Graham will need to look for creative ways to improve the student/computer ratio. In early-childhood through second grade, students will begin to use the structured lessons provided by the district to develop skills and patterns of behavior that will speed their acquisition of technology skills in later grades. Reading Counts and Lexia software we be scheduled as part of the weekly curriculum. Students in third through fifth grade classes must learn to see technology as a means to facilitate and enhance traditional learning experiences. We do them a disservice if we send them on to middle and high school with out the basic skills they will need to be successful at the next level of their education. Teachers and staff should have the training and professional development necessary to ensure that technology is a welcome and integral part of the classroom and the campus.
