Becker Elementary Department of Instructional Technology Becker Elementary Instructional Technology Implementation Plan 2009-2010 The Campus Technology Committee has developed this Technology Plan. It is aligned with the Austin ISD Technology Plan and the State Long Range Plan for Technology. The campus strategies focus on goals and objectives related to Teaching and Learning and Educator Staff Development. We feel that we are very blessed when it comes to such resources. However, we believe there are many items which could help us better serve our students: The acquisition of additional computer projectors could assist us in more seamlessly integrating technology into our daily classroom instruction. Printers for every classroom would enable teachers to access and use online resources more readily. Many of our printers are designated as EOL and will therefore not be replaced when they become nonfunctioning. The portability of flash drives enables teachers to work at home and bring the project/documents to the laptops more easily. Providing teachers with flash drives would make this portability possible. More time for educator development in integrating technology, as well as time to plan for such integration would be remarkably helpful. Further, we do have several computers that are declining as they age, and lately many of our older computers (i.e., indigo and ruby iMacs) have been declared EoL. We have been replacing some of these computers in classrooms by shuffling around machines between teachers; though, lately, this has proven rather difficult and will be, eventually, impossible. We will, ultimately, need funding to replace our EoL computers. As a final concern, we are mostly a Mac campus and utilization of electronic grade reporting (especially for bilingual reports) could be improved by the acquisition of more PCs. We remain hopeful that our technology needs will be met with improved funding. Becker Elementary Tech Plan 2009-2010 3 of 17 Becker Elementary Department of Instructional Technology Summary of most recent Campus STaR Chart Data School Technology and Readiness – Teacher Tool for Planning and Self-Assessing. Criteria and more information can be found online at http://starchart.esc12.net/ Campus STaR chart ratings based on Teacher STaR Charts as submitted to the Texas Education Agency. Ratings are based on the following scale. 1=Early Tech 2=Developing Tech 3=Advanced Tech 4=Target Tech TEACHING AND LEARNING Patterns of Classroom Use Frequency/Design of Instructional Setting Using Digital Content Content Area Connections Technology Applications (TA) TEKS Implementation Student Mastery of Technology Applications (TA) TEKS Online Learning EDUCATOR PREPARATION AND DEVELOPMENT Content of Professional Development Models of Professional Development Capabilities of Educators Access to Professional Development Becker Elementary Tech Plan 2009-2010 Campus Rating 3 3 3 4 3 1 Campus Rating 3 3 4 4 4 of 17 Becker Elementary Department of Instructional Technology Levels of Understanding and Patterns of Use Professional Development for Online Learning LEADERSHIP, ADMINISTRATION, AND INSTRUCTIONAL SUPPORT Leadership and Vision Planning Instructional Support Communication and Collaboration Budget Leadership and Support for Online Learning INFRASTRUCTURE FOR TECHNOLOGY Students per Computer Internet Access Connectivity/Speed Other Classroom Technology Technical Support Local Area Network Wide Area Network Distance Learning Capacity Becker Elementary Tech Plan 2009-2010 3 1 Campus Rating 2 2 2 3 2 3 Campus Rating 3 4 2 3 4 2 5 of 17 Becker Elementary Department of Instructional Technology Staff Development Needs As evidenced by our campus STaR Chart data, we consider ourselves advanced in many areas, but most strikingly in Teaching and Learning and Educator Preparation and Development, with the exception of online learning. Still, we could utilize more educator development focusing on the successful integration of technology into the core content curriculum areas. If time could be freed up during district staff development days—especially, if AISD could prioritize technology integration by including and scheduling it during district-wide staff development time—that could help us emphasize the importance of such integration and, hopefully, meet our campus needs. Offering stipends for after-school professional development sessions—even those held on campus—concerning technology integration into the core content areas would also probably prove helpful in increasing educator attendance and, hopefully, technology utilization. It is evident that our ratings slipped this year concerning Leadership, Administration, and Instructional Support when compared with our previous year’s school. While disheartening, it has been a difficult year at Becker in many ways; and due to below average MoY benchmark scores, the staff definitely took on extra duties campus-wide in helping our intermediate students focus on core content. This may have shifted the campus’s focus to very, very specific objectives for the most of the secondhalf of the school year. Hopefully, by next year, we can restore our campus’s vitality and energy in all areas, and thereby, improve everyone’s self-rating of our technology levels, toward more Advanced and Target Levels. Future Vision and Direction In two years, we, at Becker Elementary, aspire to honestly rate and consider ourselves as more advanced in technology integration in two crucial areas: First, we hope to enable and support educators in utilizing technology systems (e.g., AIMS and District Power, for instance) to access, examine, and analyze student assessment data in order to support sound, data-driven instructional decision-making and planning, so as to better serve all of the students on our campus. Secondly, we also hope to enable and support educators as they successfully and seamlessly integrate technology into the core content areas—integration that proves meaningful, authentic, empowering and real-world applicable to support and truly enhance student learning and understanding of core content and technology’s role in real-world issues and problem solving. We envision students engaged in real inquiry, in real-time, with teachers utilizing best practices.
