In the Adams-Onis Treaty, the U.S. received Texas and set the eastern boundary at the Red River. Spain decided to close most of its missions in East Texas for the protection of settlers. After Father Hidalgo’s death, Gutierrez and Magee invaded Texas and planned to set up a republic on their own.
