The following portions of APP are used with the Austin History Timeline activity: Date 1838 Event Mirabeau B. Lamar, vice-president of Texas, camps along the Colorado while on a Buffalo Hunt. 1839 Edwin Waller takes charge of laying out and constructing the town. 1841 Alphonse Dubois de Saligny, furious over his treatment in the “Pig War”, removes the French Legation from Austin. 1842 1845 1850 1865 1869 1871 1873 The “Archive War” reaches a climax as Austinites foil an attempt by President Houston to remove the Land Office records. Texas is annexed into the United States and Austin is named the temporary capital. Austin wins a statewide election as the capital of Texas for the next 20 years. A building boom ensues. The first telegraph message reaches Austin. A pontoon bridge across the Colorado opens, the first bridge to span the river at Austin. The first railway comes to Austin, sparking an economic boom. Diez y Seis (Mexican Independence Day) is celebrated for the first time on record in Austin. 1881 Austin public schools open with 942 (September) students. Wooldridge 1910 1924 1940 1948 1955 1983 2001 The current concrete bridge over Congress Avenue is constructed. UT’s Memorial Stadium is dedicated at the annual Thanksgiving Day football game between Texas and Texas A & M. The Austin dam is renamed the Tom Miller Dam. Prior to 1938, no significant work had been done on the dam since flood waters damaged the incomplete structure in 1915. Emma Long wins election to the city council, the first woman ever to do so. The Board of Regents opens all of UT’s educational programs to blacks. Microelectronics and Computer Technology Corporation, a consortium of high technology companies, decide to locate in Austin. President George W. Bush attends the opening of the $80 million Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum.
