WOW Game Title: Number Scramble Content Area: Math TEKS Focus: Fractions and Decimals Equivalent Fractions Physical Education Unit: Locomotor skills Grade: 5 Resource: Paula Bowen Equipment/Materials: Fractions-Blacktop or field, 4 sets of student generated index cards with whole numbers 1-5 and fractions 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, ¾, 84 bean bags (21 red, 21 blue, 21 green, 21 yellow), 4 containers (crates). Or Decimals-Blacktop or field, 4 sets of student generated index cards with whole numbers from 1-10 and decimal numbers between 1-10, 80 bean bags (20 red, 20 blue, 20 green, 20 yellow-keeps the index cards from blowing away), 4 containers (crates). Or Equivalent Fractions- Blacktop or field, 4 sets of student generated index cards with fractions and equivalent fractions, 40 bean bags (10 red, 10 blue, 10 yellow, 10 greenkeeps the index cards from blowing away), 4 containers (crates), 4 Frisbees. (16 sets-4 sets for each group) (4 sets of each-1 set for each group), 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 1/5, 2/5 2/4, 3/6, 4/8, 5/10 - and 2/6, 3/9, 4/12, 5/15 – and 2/8, 3/12, 4/16, 5/20 – and 2/10, 3/15, 4/20, 5/25 – and 4/10, 6/15, 8/20, 10/25 Set Up: Fractions-Place the whole number cards 1-5 and fraction cards for each group in their container/crate. Place 21 bean bags in a line from the team to the crate for each group. Divide the class into 4 different teams: Red, Yellow, Green, Blue Or Decimals-Place the whole number cards 1-10 and decimal cards for each group in their container/crate. Place 20 bean bags in a line from the team to the crate for each group. Divide the class into 4 different teams: Red, Yellow, Green, Blue Or Equivalent Fractions-Place “bolded” fraction cards (4 sets for each group in a Frisbee at the start for each group. Place the equivalent fractions in their container/crate. Place 20 bean bags in a line from the team to the crate for each group. Divide the class into 4 different teams: Red, Yellow, Green, Blue x denotes bean bags x x x x x x x x x x x xxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxx x x x x x x x x x x x Activity: Fractions-On the teacher’s signal, the first student will jog (hop, jump, gallop, skip) to the crate and pick up one whole number (1-5) or fraction card and place it under a bean bag in numerical order from the crate. The other students will jog in place counting by 2’s, 3’s, 5’s, 10’s while waiting on their teammate to return. The next student in line will go to the crate and play continues until all whole numbers and fraction cards are placed in order from the crate. The teacher will check to see if students have all 5 whole number cards and 4 sets of fractions cards in the correct order. If not, the teacher should tell the team how many numbers are correct. Students must then take the incorrect whole numbers and fractions back to the crate and return them in the correct order under the bean bag, one whole number or fraction at a time. Or Decimals-On the teacher’s signal, the first student will jog (hop, jump, gallop, skip) to the crate and pick up one whole number (1-10) or a decimal card and place it under a bean bag in numerical order from the crate. The other students will jog in place counting by 2’s, 3’s, 5’s, 10’s while waiting on their teammate to return. The next student in line will go to the crate and play continues until all whole numbers and decimal cards are placed in order from the crate. The teacher will check to see if students have all 5 number cards and 4 sets of fractions cards in the correct order. If not, the teacher should tell the team how many numbers are correct. Students must then take the incorrect numbers and fractions back to the crate and return them in the correct order under the bean bag, one number or fraction at a time. Or Equivalent Fractions- On the teacher’s signal, the first student will take a fraction from the Frisbee and (hop, jump, gallop, skip) to the crate and match an equivalent fraction and place it under a bean bag. The other students will jog in place counting by 2’s, 3’s, 4’s, 5’s, 10’s (teacher designates) while waiting on their teammate to return. The next student in line will get the next fraction card from the Frisbee and go to the crate and play continues until all the fractions and equivalent fractions are placed under a bean bag. The teacher will check to see if students have all sets of fractions cards correct. If not, the teacher should tell the team which ones and how many are correct. Students must then fix the incorrect sets one at a time, one person at a time until all are correct and complete. Variations: Multiplication/Division answers in the Frisbee, number equation in the crate Review Questions: Skill focus: Was this activity aerobic or anaerobic? Academic focus: What is an equivalent fraction for 4/10?
