WOW Game Title: Crows and Cranes Content Area: Math TEKS Focus: Measurement-Capacity & Weight Time and Temperature Fraction Concepts Physical Education Unit: Cardiovascular Grade: 3 Resource: Catch Activity Box 3-5 Equipment/Materials: 12 or more small cones to designate boundary area Set Up: Place a line of cones at two ends of the playing area and also directly in the middle of the playing area. Students partner up and face each other standing finger to finger with their arms stretched out to create an equal distance in between each other. “Weight” “Capacity” " Activity: One partner will represent “weight” and the other will represent “capacity”. The teacher will say either “weight” or “capacity” and that is how the students will know who the “chaser” will be. The “chaser” chases the person straight back to distance of the cones behind them. The students come back immediately to the middle and if the person was tagged, they perform 5 jumping jacks or push-ups. If they were not tagged, the chaser must do 5 jumping jacks or push-ups. They will stand finger to finger again to signal they are ready for the next chaser to be named. After the students understand the game, the teacher holds up a picture (provided) that shows how you measure capacity instead of saying the words “capacity” or “weight”. The students then need to figure out which method measuring would match their group and would call out the correct answer. After discussing the correct answer, the teacher says GO and the correct chaser chases the other student. Ex. If the picture is a measuring cup the “Capacity” students would chase. Safety: Students need to stand in between the cones and not in front of them so that they don’t trip over the cones. They must also only tag with 2 fingers and run in a straight line to the set of cones at the end of the playing area. Consider starting kids off with a slower locomotor skill such as walking. The teacher can hold up signs used in order to help students know who the chaser is. Variations: Give the students a math problem and have the students call out if it’s odd or even. After discussing if the answer is odd or even, the teacher says GO and the correct chaser chases the other student. Assign the students to be “time” or “temperature”. The teacher calls out 5:00 and the “time” students chase, if the teacher calls out 87 degrees, the “temperature” students would chase. Assign the students to be “a whole” and the other group is “a fraction”. The teacher calls out a whole number or a fraction and the correct group chases. After discussing if the answer is a “whole” or “fraction”, the teacher says GO and the correct chaser chases the other student. Review Questions: Skill focus: Name a cardio exercise. Name a muscular strength exercise. Academic focus: If I went to the store to buy grapes and wanted to know how much I was spending per pound, what tool would I use to measure the grapes?
