WOW Game Title: It’s In the Cards
Content Area: Math
TEKS Focus: Counting and Exploring Numbers
Physical Education Unit: Locomotor Skills
Grade: 3
Resource: Tracy Lord
Equipment/Materials: 6 decks of cards, “It’s In the Cards” Resource Sheet (provided)
Set Up: Divide students into 6 groups and give each group plenty of space so that the
different deck of cards stay separated. Give each group a deck of cards. Post the “It’s In
the Cards” Resource Sheet. Finally, give the groups a mathematical operation to use for
the game.
Activity:
The first person in the group chooses a card out of the stack. After the card is chosen, the
group will use the “It’s In the Cards” Resource Sheet to determine what locomotor skill
the group will perform. Then the group will need to use math skills to decide how many
of each exercise to perform. After the group has performed the required activity, a new
student should pick a new card and a new activity is performed by the group.
Example: Teacher asks each group to add 10 to each card that they choose from the
deck. One group chooses a queen. When students look at the “It’s In the Cards”
Resource sheet, they can see that they need to hop 10 times. The students would then
add 10 for a total of 20 hops before picking a new card and a new activity.
Variations:
 Use multiplication, division, subtraction.
