WOW Game Title: Dribbling Math Content Area: Math TEKS Focus: Understanding Addition/Subtraction Geometry and Spatial Reasoning Physical Education Unit: Ball Handling Grade: 1 Resource: PE Central, www.pecentral.org Equipment/Materials: 1 ball for every student, a deck of cards (1-10 only) Set Up: Every student except 2-3 (depending on the number of students in your class) has a ball. Students without a ball stand by the teacher. The rest of the students are in scattered formation within a 25’ x 25’ area. Activity: On the teacher’s command, students begin dribbling a ball (dribble with dominant hand, more advanced students dribble alternating hands). The 2-3 students who do not have a ball, go to the teacher. The teacher holds up 2 cards from the deck and the students must add, subtract or multiply the numbers on the cards, and give the correct answer to the teacher. Once they have the correct answer, the student then goes into the playing area and trades places with another student. (Boys choose girls, girls choose boys; students should choose a different student each time.) The student chosen must go to the teacher to get 2 cards to add or subtract, and tell the teacher the correct answer. The students without balls will change frequently, so everyone should get an opportunity to answer math questions and to dribble a ball. The game continues until the teacher signals to stop. On the teacher’s signal, the students freeze. If there are any students who have not had an opportunity to answer math problems, the teacher should then select them to come answer questions. Variations Have students tell time Have students identify geometric shapes (sheet provided) and point to an identical geometric shape from their surroundings Students could skip-count by (2’s, 3,’s, 5’s, 10’s) or count to 100 while dribbling Review Questions: Skill focus: Where should your eyes be focused while dribbling?
