Week 8 PreKindergarten P.E. IPG’s Guideline Matrix Week None 105 #8 Relationships with Objects Card #14 Bouncing Description Game 1: Arrange 2 jump ropes on the floor, close together at one end and farther apart at the other. Jump from two feet to two feet across the “river” from the narrow end to the wide end. Game 2: Start with feet apart, straddling a line or jump rope, then jump with feet together. Travel “apart, together, apart, and together” along the line. Game 3: Make a circle with a jump rope, or use spot markers. Hop around the outside of the circle. Travel around in the other direction on the other leg. Equipment Jump ropes or hoops Spot markers Playground markings Day 1 Scatter spot markers throughout the playing area. Make sure there is one for each student. Review jumping locomotor skill from Week 7. have students jump over, on, around, back and forth, in front of, behind, backwards, sideways, etc. around their assigned poly spot. Have students will use different foot patterns to jump on and off of their spot markers – jumping off 2 feet and landing on 2 feet, jumping off 1 foot and landing on 2 feet, jumping off 2 feet and landing on 1 foot, jumping off 1 foot and landing on the same foot (this is hopping), and jumping off 1 foot and landing on the opposite foot (this is leaping). Day 2 Replace the poly spots with a 3’ piece of yarn (for each child). If jump ropes are available, you could use them instead of 3’ piece of yarn. Repeat Day 1 activities with the yarn. Add a foot pattern such as jump back and forth sideways over the yarn using both feet. Day 3 Give students two pieces of 3’ yarn (for each child). Students will be making a “river” with the two pieces of yarn. Demonstrate laying the yarn parallel to each other, wide at one end and narrow at the other. Students do the same with their yarn, creating a wide mouth river feeding into a narrow area. Students move across the “river” without getting their feet “wet” (meaning feet can’t get in between the yarn pieces). This is an exploration and discovery time with students experimenting ways to accomplish this feat. Have students share out the way they were able to cross the “river” using correct PE vocabulary (leaping, jumping, hopping, etc.) or teachers prompt these vocabulary words as students demonstrate their technique. Additionally, teachers can encourage all students to practice what the other students have demonstrated. (“Tommy said he jumped over his river. Can everyone jump over their river?”) Day 4 Using the two pieces of 3’ yarn, the students lay them parallel about a foot apart (not wide and narrow). Students will straddle the yarn and then jump, pulling their feet back together inside the river (straddle/inside). Practice three times. (Safety Alert: It’s important for students to learn how to land when jumping/bouncing. They need to land softly, bending their knees to absorb the shock and feet apart to maintain balance.). Patterns for students to practice include: outside/inside/outside (with feet together, jumping forward) and turn around to come back doing the same; start feet together inside, jump outside, turn around and jump back over the river; and outside/inside/outside (with feet together, jumping sideways). Remember to practice each pattern at least three times, resting between patterns, and emphasizing words and direction. © Austin Independent School District SportFun A Module of the Sport For All Program Week 8 PreKindergarten P.E. IPG’s Day 5 Teacher organizes four jumping areas/centers: Center 1 has two parallel rivers, Center 2 has two wide/narrow rivers, Center 3 has 5 pieces of 3’ yarn, and Center 4 has 5 poly spots. Divide students into four equal groups. Have students move into their center and start practicing/exploring the activity at that center upon teacher signal. Use the stop signal to freeze students. Move each group of students to a different center (students point to the center they are going to and then move upon teacher signal). Upon teacher signal, start the time again. Using about two minutes in each center would allow for practicing this week’s activities and exploring movement, plus give students a rest before transitioning to the next center. Teacher Notes Safety Alert: It’s important for students to learn how to land when jumping/bouncing. They need to land softly, bending their knees to absorb shock and feet apart to maintain balance.. Practice bending knees for springy jumps and hops without equipment (“squash” your landings). If you use hoops on the floor, make sure your students do not stand on them. Your students may tire quickly. Encourage them to rest briefly. Encourage students to try hopping on each foot. Make sure they jump with control. © Austin Independent School District SportFun A Module of the Sport For All Program
