APPROVE MINUTES – 1/31/2013 MSC: Barton/Miller – (Unanimous) Approval of minutes for the meeting of 1/31/13, approved as written. II. ANNOUNCEMENTS No announcements. III. DQP UPDATE Last Fall Wendy and Katy submitted a proposal to the ACCJC for the district to participate in the Degree Qualifications Profile project in partnership with the Lumina Foundation. The project seemed like a good fit for the district because Palomar’s GE/ILOs aligned closely with the DQP The faculty senate was concerned about how Palomar’s data would be used so they recommended that Palomar not participate in the project. IV. DISCUSS THE NUMBER OF GE/ILOs Wendy distributed a handout with the current breakdown of the district’s GE/ILOs. There are 4 outcomes with outcomes having additional sub-outcomes (intellectual and practical skills & personal and social responsibility. Members that were present would like to continue counting them as 4 GE/ILOs. Learning Outcomes Council V. 2 February 7, 2013 BRAINSTORM IDEAS FOR GE/ILO Assessment Wendy distributed an example of a survey that one college is using to assess their ILOs. Discussion followed with suggestions on surveys and other methods of assessment. Feedback: The CCSSE survey can be used as a supplement survey to aid in assessment. It touches on many areas of the ILOs. However, it is insufficient as a stand-alone survey for GE/ILO assessment. Portfolios or ePortfolios were suggested as a direct form of assessment It is possible to apply multiple assessment methods for a single outcome. Some colleges are taking their course level assessments and discussing/sharing them at the college wide level. This could be another approach. Use required event participation and an accompanying survey to assess knowledge (i.e. Civic knowledge and engagement) Embed direct and indirect assessments into the courses through Blackboard so instructors can see and analyze how their students are responding. Another suggestion was to use social media to survey students. VI. RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN COR AND SLOs The question of whether Palomar should include SLOs on CORs was discussed. These were some of the concerns: CORs are evaluated and used for articulation to the 4 year universities. The universities have say on the wording and content of the CORs in order to keep the articulation agreement. If SLOs are included on the COR, then they become part of the official document and can be subject to evaluation by the universities. Curricunet does not allow the flexibility to change or adapt the SLOs without going through a formal process. The group decided to continue this discussion at future meetings. Meeting was adjourned at 3:22pm. Next Meeting February 28, 2013 2:00 – 3:30pm AA-140
