Study of the Geologic Facies around Majma’ah University Area Saif Al Harbi Saleh Al Farhood Salman Mammdoh Al Aslab Eng. Yahiya Al Jahmany Civil and Environmental Engineering Department College of Engineering, Engineering Day 23 April 2013 1 2 Objectives This study aims to apply a geologic evaluation of sedimentary facies in the area around Majma’ah University. Other objectives are: 1- Introduce a geological description the facies at the study area; 2- Characterize the geological sub-facies in the rock layers and beds which will reveal a lot of geologic secrets about the historical geology of the study area, and will give an idea about the ancient environment, the ancient animal and plant life. 3 Significance to KSA Each country should seek for having its own database about the detailed geologic studies for each part of it. It is vital to have its detailed geologic facies database for each part of country. Such database would be of great benefits to studies related to groundwater exploration, petroleum and gas researches, and the mining of natural resources. As far as the team-work concerns this is the first study in the selected area. 4 Description of the Study Area • Al Majma’ah governorate lies nearly at longitude line (Easting 46) and at latitude line (25 Northing) Fig. (1). The average elevation of the area is about (720 m) above sea level. It is a flat area penetrated by (Al Mishqar Valley) in the northern part area. • Hydrological study of the area indicates a drainage pattern from (Towaiq Mountains) in the west and from south towards the east. 5 Geology of the Study Area 6 Fig. (1) Geologic map of KSA Field work In this mini project, field measurements of some geological features at the study area have been carried out using simple geological devices in order to report a geological description of the facies at the area. Besides, facies changes with differences in the conditions of rock formation and compared the facies changes to the changes that can be observed on the present-day were detected. 7 Results and Summary The results of this study showed that the dominant geologic facies in the study area indicates that limestone strata are the common geologic bed covering the earth crust. These beds are composed of (Khinsar) and (Hiqaqah) formations from the (Urumah) Group which goes back to the Upper Cretaceous age, beside the existence of the recent deposits from the (Cenozoic Era). 8 Thanks for your attentions 9
