Global Questions and Potential Changes
1. Prioritize the action items or the goals or all of the above. A unit should not be
able to pick and choose which items of the plan to fulfill.
What about the items not stated in the goals, like improving the quality of life, or
devotion to the accumulation and dissemination of new knowledge, or commitment to
diversity, or the shared (students, faculty, staff, broader community) commitment to the
graduation and success of our students.
2. Does this plan let us know how we fit within the USG? How are we seen by the
USG?
3. The goals of the plan and perhaps the plan itself should be driven more by data or
research, social science research. How do we know that any of these suggestions
will work?
4. Will the professional aspect of the goal one set up false or unrealistic expectations
of students.
5. Make more transparent (I think an index would be useful for this) the way that the
USG goals are met by the UWG goals.
6. What about a commitment to a healthy body; bring back the PE requirement.
Some Changes
Goal 1:
1. Experiential learning is a vague and problematic term and why should it be so
privileged and exclude other types of learning?
2. Perhaps substitute experiences?
3. Put the goal related to research and grant dollars here.
4. Goal 1.a.5: strike “in their chosen field.”
5. Goal 1.a.6: either take out or put in the number for increase study abroad.
6. Goal 1.b. : look to other student services practices (like housing) for greater
community building and integration for the students.
7. Goal 1.c: We need to be more explicit about the development of additional
graduate programs.
Goal 2:
1. The issues of climate and culture need an ongoing assessment of some sort.
2. Should there me more about student life in this goal?
Goal 3:
1. Perhaps we should delete the line about Customer Service since it is already in
fourth bullet.
2. In stressing efficiency should we add that we will not sacrifice quality for
efficiency?
Goal 4:
1. In addition to increased research dollars, add increased dollars as a result of
professional practice.
2. Add a goal about commitment to community service.
3. In the first bullet we should take out the word targeted because it might seem
limiting and prevent good work and would not really prevent anything that would
be detrimental to the UWG mission.
