Greetings from Disability Services,
As we begin this new academic year, Disability Services would like to
extend an invitation.
The professionals working within our team across the district are
available to faculty as a resource. We are here not just to coordinate
the provision of academic accommodations, but also to meet and
discuss issues around equal access and usability.
Disability Services shift from hard copy to paperless
Disability Services has been working hard to improve efficiency and effectiveness. Over the last year we
have shifted to a paperless system that connects team members across the district and allows for
enhanced collaborations and partnerships.

within specific programs of study.

Fast Facts
Disability in Higher Education in the United States
According to the US Census report titled “Americans with Disabilities: 2010” 57 Million people living in
the United States in 2010 experience disability. This represents 19% of the population.
AT PCC, Approximately 1,300 students are eligible to use accommodation each year at PCC.
This represents less than 3% of our credit seeking students.
Resources
Our handout “What Faculty Need to Know About Disability Services (DS) at Portland Community College”
as well as our Faculty Resources – available on our website should be of great help.
There are excellent collaborations in place between faculty, instructional support, distance learning, and
disability services. There are also institutional memberships and pilot programs that we are showcasing
on our website and through spaces. Check www.pcc.edu/disability or go to http://spaces.pcc.edu and
search for “curricular access”
Accommodation and Equal Access Series through TLC
This session is offered regularly through the TLCs on each campus. We encourage faculty to attend. This
is a session that is good for new faculty, but also for those who have been teaching here for some time.
Universal Design Pilot – Livescribe Multimedia Notes
Disability Services has livescribe pens that we will loan out to faculty. This way either a student in the
course, or an accessibility aid, can take multimedia notes that can then be used by all students in the
course. The feedback from the initial pilot was very promising.
Subject Area Specific Studies and Presentations at Dept. Meetings
Just contact us to begin the process of identifying good options. We have team members on all
campuses as well as coordinators and specialists who travel across the district.
