Indonesia: Madura in East Java
Interesting cultural events
• Madura is an island at the northeast of Java, Indonesia.
Though it's soil is not as fertile as in Java Island, its culture
is as rich and unique as its neighbour land.
Some basic information
• Madura is an Indonesian island off the
northeastern coast of Java. The island
comprises an area of approximately 4,250
km² and a population of about four million,
most of whom are ethnically Madurese.
The main language of Madura is
Madurese, which is also spoken in part of
eastern Java and on many of the 66
outlying islands. Madura is administered
as part of the East Java province.
Karapan Sapi
• One of its famous one is Karapan Sapi,
which is cow racing. prime male cows are
being raced regularly and the biggest
one is the president's cup Karapan Sapi
held every year around the month of
October. As for the prime female cows
they do some kind of beauty contest where
all the cows are adorned with headdress
and glittering accessories. The contest is
named Sapi Sonok, and it's usually held
around the same time as the Karapan Sapi
event.

• This annual festival is quite amazing really
and is apparently less well known than
kerapan sapi. The festival involves cows
performing a series of co-ordinated steps
as they walk side by side down a
measured walk way towards the judges.
They walk in perfect harmony with each
other as their master signals them from
behind by using ropes. When the cows
reach the judges they must place both
front hoofs on a raised piece of wood.
Then they stand there and wait to be
judged.

MORE ABOUT MADURA
Suramadu Bridge
• Madura Island is part of East Java regency that
needs a better access. Madura has a lot to
offer. It has excellent quality agricultural outputs
and beautiful scenery and events to attract
tourists. The completion of the bridge from
Madura to Java is expected to improve the flow
of people, goods and service from and to this
island. It is expected to have major social and
economic impacts for the island. The Suramadu
Bridge connecting Surabaya and Madura Island
went into service in July, 2009. The 5.4-km
(3.35-mile) Suramadu bridge cost about 4.5
trillion rupiah ($450 million) to build with about
half the funds loaned from China.

• Sumenep is the antithesis of all the negative
myths about Madura. A refined and truly
friendly town, here the familiar “hello mister!”
was always backed up with a polite and
interested engagement as I walked along the
quiet streets. Sumenep was once the center
of an independent kingdom and the town is
still home to a fine kraton and a royal mosque.
Locals are eager to point out that the
reputation of Madurese as rough-spoken and
aggressive only applies to the people from the
west of the island. They are genuinely proud
of their courtly heritage, and the royal tombs
on the hilltop of Asta Tinggi outside the town
are a place of pilgrimage.
