Suggestopedia By the end of this lecture, students should be able to: Develop an awareness about the history of suggestopedia. Recognize the nature of suggestopedia. Define suggestopedia . Recognize the methodology of suggestopedia. Identify the advantages and disadvantages of suggestopedia. Form an outline about suggestopedia. Objectives of this lecture The History of the Suggestopedia: Suggestopedia was developed by Bulgarian psychiatrist–educator Georgi Lozanov (1982), who wanted to eliminate the psychological barriers that people have to learning. It uses drama, art, physical exercise, and desuggestive–suggestive communicative psychotherapy as well as the traditional modes of listening, speaking, reading, and writing to teach a second language. He came up with a method for learning that used relaxation as a means of absorbing and retaining new knowledge and material. The nature of Suggestopedia: The classroom atmosphere is crucial. Creating a relaxed, nonthreatening learning environment is essential for its success. Music played an essential role in his method. Vocabulary, readings, role-plays and drama are presented with classical music in the background and comfortable seating. In this way, students became "suggestible". Classrooms are equipped with comfortable seating arrangements and dim lighting in an effort to provide an inviting and appealing environment. The nature of Suggestopedia: The use of the native language is also allowed, especially to give directions and to create that welcoming atmosphere. As in the ALM, dialogues are employed, but they are presented in an enhanced fashion through creative dramatics. Based on the belief that how students feel about learning will make a difference in the learning process, Suggestopedia takes into consideration the affective domain. If the students feel they can learn, they will. Definition of Suggestopedia: Suggestopedia is a teaching method, which focuses on how to deal with the relationship between mental potential and learning ability and it is very appropriate to use in teaching speaking for young language learners. It is one of methods which concerns to students’ learning style because there are visual display, audio, and physical involvements during learning process. Moreover, it involves emotional meaning in given the lesson which help students’ better in memorizing. The Methodology of Suggestopedia: 1. Presentation: Presentation is the basis of conducting Suggestopedia in class successfully. The main aim in this stage is to help students relax and move into a positive frame of mind, with the feeling that the learning is going to be easy and funny. Desuggestion and suggestion happen at this stage at the same time. 2. Concert :First Concert This involves the active presentation of the material to be learnt. Extended dialogues, often several pages in length, accompanied by vocabulary lists and observations on grammatical points. Typically these dialogues will be read aloud to students to the accompaniment of music. 3. Second Concert : After the readings of these long dialogues to the accompaniment of music, the teacher will then make use of the dialogues for more conventional language work. The students, then, make and practice dialogue after they memorize the content of the materials. 4. Practice The use of a range of role-plays, games, puzzles, etc. to review and consolidate the learning. Advantages of Suggestopedia: 1. Memorization in learning through suggestopedia would be accelerated by up to 25 times over that in conventional learning methods. 2. Students can acquire the aim of teaching instruction from both direct instruction and environment in which the teaching takes place. 3. Suggestopedia encourages the students to apply language more independently, takes more personal responsibility for their own learning and get more confidence. 4. Students remember best and are most influenced by information coming from an authoritative source, teachers. Disadvantages of Suggestopedia: 1. Environment limitation: One of the problems faced in utilizing this method is the number of students in the class. 2. The use of hypnosis: Some people say that suggestopedia uses a hypnosis, so it has bad deep effects for human beings. 3. Suggestopedia class is conditioned be child-like situation. There are some students who do not like to be treated like this as they think that they are mature. 4. Current textbooks do not embrace this methodology, thus making it difficult for teachers to apply the principles in regular classrooms. 5. The idea of a teacher reading a long dialogue aloud, with exaggerated rhythm and intonation, to the accompaniment of Beethoven or Mozart may well seem ridiculous to many people. Application : Typical Techniques: •The use of music, role-plays and drama. •Homework •Free is limited.
