Subcommittee Meeting 12/02/2013
In attendance: Casey, Katy; Kolb, Sharon; Gwalla-Ogisi, Nomsa; Robinson, Rowand; Schultz,
Tia; Stuart, Shannon
1. Undergraduate Program
a. SPECED 385 will move to 3 credits for Fall 2014.
b. SPECED 361 and SPECFLD will remain connected courses. Minors will no
longer be taking 361 or 385. (Minor advisors will begin to substitute classes and
making plan changes when they meet with students for Fall advising.)
c. Recommended 361 substitutions for students in minor program:
i. 450 EBD focus
ii. 465 or 476 CD focus
iii. 487 LD focus
d. The minor plan will need to be updated to reflect these changes and this can be
done as another committee meeting and/ or the minor program advisors, and then
to the department for approval.
e. SPECFLD 485 will stay 2 credits for now
f. SPECLD 410 will move to 2 credits (this was a prior recommendation from the
circular redesign committee), paperwork will need to be submitted for Fall 2014.
g. SPECED 380 discussion:
i. Currently, we agreed it is in the departments’ best interest NOT to
eliminate the Phase 3, SPECED 380 course.
ii. The course will basically stay the same for SPRING 2014 with the added
change of tweaking the narrative to help students with writing their
narrative for the edTPA.
iii. We will have a standard narrative template for students to follow. There is
a sample narrative in the handbook and also a lesson plan template that is
used in SPECED 361.
iv. Shannon agreed to pilot the revision of the narrative piece and we will
have a follow-up meeting to address changes, feedback, etc.
2. Graduate Program
a. We discussed the possibility of making a Graduate Fieldwork class (SPECED
685) that would provide our graduates with a field opportunity and combine
elements of the edTPA phase 3 pieces. SPECED 640 and SPECFLD 685 would
be taken the same semester.
i. Possibly change SPECFLD 685 and 675 to make new course design of
edTPA and phase 3.
ii. If possible student in the graduate program will take SPECED 761 prior to
taking the 640 methods/685 FW (675) course.
b. Change SPECED 676 Multiple Disabilities to grade level only class, evening
section – we could also change this course to a 700 level course to help with
graduate options. This can be discussed at a future grad meeting.
c. Have a Phase 4 SPECED 680 course that addresses edTPA requirements for
graduate students and discuss if should be 1 or 2 credits.
