SUMMER 2006 TRAVEL STUDY PROGRAMS AUSTRALIA, NEW ZEALAND, ENGLAND OR SCOTLAND EDFOUND 760 Comparative Education & Overseas Fieldwork Dates: June 10 - July 7, 2006 This four-week program is designed for experienced K-12 teachers who are interested in exploring classroom practices through direct observation and hands-on activities in one of four English-speaking countries. Individual teachers will be placed for approximately two weeks with a host teacher in the country of their choice. This school/home placement will be followed by one week of independent study/travel and a week of seminars with the other members of the group. Participants will also be required to attend three Saturday pre-fieldwork seminars (Noon to 5pm on Feb 4, Mar 11, May 6) on the UW-Whitewater campus during spring semester and one post-fieldwork seminar on October 7. JAMAICA CIGENRL 790 Workshop: Jamaica Reading/Math Clinic Dates: June 17 - July 1, 2006 This course can be used to fulfill the 4-credit field requirement for teachers seeking 316/17 licensure or serve as an elective in the MSC&I program or as continuing education credit for other practicing teachers. It offers participants the opportunity to provide in-service instruction to Jamaican teachers and to interact in a clinic setting with Jamaican students who might not otherwise be helped due to the shortage of trained reading and mathematics teachers in the country. Participants are also required to participate in pre- and post-trip meetings at UW-Whitewater on Sat, April 15 (10am-2pm), Monday through Thursday, June 12-15 (10:45am-1:25pm); Saturday, July 8 (1-5pm). POLAND, CZECH REPUBLIC AND GERMANY ENGLISH 491/691 Remembering the Holocaust Dates: July 17 – 28, 2006 This travel study course offers an overview of the Holocaust from a variety of historical, religious, societal, psychological, and literary perspectives. It is designed for K-12 teachers, UWW alumni, university faculty and students, and other interested travelers. Learning more about the Holocaust is the primary goal of this program, however, participants will also visit other places of historical significance while touring contemporary Warsaw and Krakow (Poland), Prague (Czech Republic), Nuremberg and Berlin (Germany). Students are also required to attend pre and post-trip meetings, dates to be arranged. CZECH REPUBLIC, AUSTRIA, HUNGARY CIGENRL 491/691 Passages to the Danube Dates: July 30 – August 11, 2006 This escorted tour precedes the 21st World Congress on Reading which will be held in Budapest, Hungary, August 8-10, 2006. It is designed for reading teachers, specialists, university faculty and students who are planning to attend the 21st World Congress. Participants will explore the sights and sounds of Prague (Czech Republic) and Vienna (Austria) before proceeding to Budapest. Arrangements and expenses related to attending the World Congress are not included.
