What is Data Management?
Data management refers to administrative processes and
procedures by which institutional data are acquired, validated,
accessed, defined and protected.
8
Reasons to develop a Data Management
approach
• USG requires us to do so:
http://www.usg.edu/information_technology_handbook/
• It makes sense and will benefit us directly.
9
Data Management at UGA
Current state:
• Centrally and departmentally managed applications have good
security and access controls and tend to have steward
(custodian) engagement.
• Consistency needed in the areas of metadata development and
sharing, roles and responsibilities, access to information.
10
Data Management at UGA
Future state:
• Data Management and Governance Committee meets to
develop standards collaboratively.
• Documentation is developed and shared across UGA.
• Begin with core data domains, broaden scope in years ahead.
11
Data Management and Governance
Committee
• Began meeting in January
• Will meet monthly for the first 6 – 9 months.
• Make recommendations regarding stewardship, data definition
sharing, standard data access philosophy.
• Share documentation broadly for UGA community use.
12
Committee Membership
• Administrative Units
• Legal Affairs
• InfoSec
• EITS administrative system representatives
13
Milestones Completed to Date
• Steward/Trustee identification and communication
• Data inventory development
• DED work with Strategic Reporting Team
• Banner data governance and reporting lessons learned
• External report inventory
14
Data Management and Governance Website
• Resource to data stewards and consumers
• Provides guidance on who to ask for what types of institutional
data
• Information on institution-wide data governance, including
committee membership, agendas and action minutes

FY16 User Verification
• Each year the University of Georgia undergoes an annual financial audit by the State of Georgia
Auditors. In preparation for the FY16 audit, we want to make you aware of some preparation
activities that will begin shortly related to user access verification.
• Verification of all user accounts on the following systems will be conducted:
• Mainframe
• Banner
• Identity Management systems
• This verification will involve users verifying the need for the access that they have, and
supervisors reviewing and deciding to approve or deny this access for employees under their
purview.
• This internal review of user account access will continue to occur on an annual basis in order to
comply with the expectations of the USG IT Handbook (Section 3).
