Office of Risk Management/Environmental Health and Safety (RM/EHS) UWG Ethyl Alcohol (Tax-Free) Program The University of West Georgia (UWG) has an approved Industrial Alcohol Permit from the U.S. Tobacco Trade Bureau [TTB], (formerly known as the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms), to purchase alcohol, free of the Federal Alcohol Tax. Tax-free alcohol (TFA) is pure, USP/ACS grade 190 proof or 200 proof ethyl alcohol. User Requirements: Researchers who obtain tax-free ethanol from the UWG Industrial Alcohol Permit MUST agree to comply with the following requirements: Dispensing personnel are required by Federal law to document transactions. Signatures will be required by persons who use tax-free ethanol. Tax-free ethanol will be used for legitimate research, scientific, medicinal, or mechanical purposes only (ethanol will not be used for beverages, food products or human consumption). Departments authorized to purchase tax-free ethanol are required to regulate its purchases to ensure that the quantity on hand does not exceed the capacity of the storage facilities and the quantity received in one calendar year does not exceed the quantity authorized on the permit. Purchases of TFA are currently only allowed for designated staff in the Department of Biology. You are not allowed to re-sell tax-free alcohol, use tax-free alcohol in the manufacture of any product for sale, or sell any products resulting from the use of tax-free alcohol. Tax-free ethanol containers must be secure inside a locked, flammable-rated storage cabinet at all times when not in use. TFA stored in closed cabinets within a locked room is considered to be adequately secured. You may not remove tax-free ethanol from the premises and you may not transport it to any location other than a University-owned building on campus to which the permit has been issued. You must maintain tax-free alcohol use records and retain on-site for a period of three years from the date of transaction. Use records and storage areas are subject to inspection at any time by representatives of the UWG Risk Management/Environmental Health & Safety Office and/or agents of the TTB. Note: If there are any questions regarding the researcher responsibilities, the Federal regulations, or ordering tax-free alcohol, please call Theresa Jablecki-Kriel at 678-839-6278.
