1302 Study Guide for Exam Three

You have an hour and twenty minutes for this exam, so WATCH YOUR TIME. You should spend
roughly 40 minutes on your essay and 40 minutes on your short answers.
Part I. Short Answer Exercises. 60pts. total
The following FOUR terms will be on your exam. You will choose THREE and write a short
answer for each term. Remember these are not essays, so keep them concise and to the point.
You should define each term, put them in their historical context AND give the reason WHY
they were historically important. In other words, answer the basic “who, what, where, when,
why”. Your answers should average at least two paragraphs but no more than a page in length.
Each answer is worth 20 points.

Part II. Essay. 40pts. total
The following essay will be on the exam. Your essay must include an introduction, your points
of discussion and a conclusion.
Trace the causes of the Great Depression and the catalyst that signaled the collapse of the
American economy. What were the major problems faced by people living during the
Depression and how did they cope?
Both Teddy Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson are characterized as Progressive reform presidents,
yet their political philosophies were very different. Discuss the domestic agenda and reform
policies of each president and how their actions and legislation reflected their particular political
philosophy. Which president was more effective and why?
What motivated the United States to pursue an Imperialist policy during the 19th century? What
were the results? In your opinion, did Imperialism positively or negatively impact the U.S?
Defend your answer.
