MONROE COMMUNITY COLLEGE
FACILITIES DEPARTMENT
SUMMER NEWSLETTER – 2003
As you prepare to wrap-up academic activities after graduation or as you take a little
breather before embarking with us on a busy summer preparing for our next fall
semester, please take a moment to read about the summer 2003 slate of facility
activities. We hope our efforts will make your life here at MCC more pleasant in the
long term – even if they present some temporary short-term disruptions between now
and next fall.
A. MASTER PLAN
By next fall the first phase of the new Campus Center should be open for
business. As you have read about in other announcements and publicity
forums, this gorgeous new facility will feature a new bookstore (already open),
new dining facilities, multimedia facilities, conference, club and meeting
rooms, and office space. Phase Two activities will commence shortly and
include additional renovations in existing areas of Buildings 1 and 3 along with
a new south addition to Building 3. Our main campus air conditioning system
has already been replaced under this project and the elevators in Buildings 2, 3
and 5 were retrofitted last intersession with new lifting mechanisms to meet the
latest codes. During this summer the same work will be performed on the
elevator in Building 8.
B. SOUTH OVERFLOW PARKING LOT
In the never ending attempt to keep up with growing
enrollment and the associated need for more parking,
we will expand on the gravel overflow lot constructed
last summer and pave both the existing lot as well as
the addition. This project will provide over 500 new
permanent parking spaces for year round use.
C. COGENERATION PLANT
Work will continue on our “big dig” out in front of Building 7. By the start of
the fall semester, the new underground area should be complete with the front
of the campus looking more like normal. New boilers for heat and hot water
needs will be operational in September as the cold weather of next winter
approaches. By next January the schedule calls for the electric generators to be
operational and providing us with all our own electricity except for RG&E
backup. Unfortunately, because of this project, we will need another major
power shutdown towards the end of the summer but will send out separate
notices to the community on this as the schedule firms up.
D. CONCRETE AND BRICK REPAIRS
Deteriorating building facades will undergo
repair starting this summer and proceeding
through the fall. Most notable of these will be
the replacement of the concrete at the top of the
entrance ramp to Building 1. This work will
necessitate entering the building from the lower
level and taking the elevator to the upper floors.
Again, more details on this schedule will be
published as they become available. In case
you were worrying, the entry way to Building 1
will be restored to normal before the start of the
fall semester.
E. BUILDING 1 HVAC SYSTEM REPLACEMENT
This is a major equipment replacement project to finally address years of
inadequate system capacity, to improve substandard interior comfort levels, and
to bring the machinery up-to-date and in compliance with today’s energy
conservation and efficiency standards. Work will begin shortly and continue
into the fall.
