How to enter and use program FITTEST
The FITTEST program will perform chi-square goodness-of-fit test on a TI-83. (The TI-84 already has a
goodness-of-fit test in it).
To enter the program:
Use the PRGM key, select NEW. This puts the calculator into the alpha-lock mode for entering the
program name. Since the it is in alpha-lock mode, you can type <Cos><X2><4><4><Sin><Ln><4> to enter
the name FITTEST, then press <ENTER> to begin entering the program.
To get “Disp”, <Prgm><right-arrow (I/O)><3>, then <2nd><ALPHA>
to put the calculator in alpha-lock. <”> is over the <-> key. Space
is over the <0> key. To get L1 or L2 or L3 or L4, you can temporarily
take the calculator out of alpha-lock, and type <2nd><1>, etc. “=” is
<2nd><MATH><1>. To enter digits, temporarily take the calculator
out of alpha-lock mode and just press the digit.
“Prompt” is <PRGM><I/O><2>
“If” is <PRGM><1>, “Then” is <PRGM><2>, “End” is <PRGM><7>
“dim” is 2nd/list/ops/3
“sum(” is <2nd><STAT><MATH><5>. The “->” is “STO>”, the key
immediately above the ON key.
“2” is the <X2> key.
“Chi-Sq-cdf(“ is <2nd><VARS><7>. “dim(“ is <2nd><STAT><OPS><3>.
To run the program:
First put the observed data in L2 using <STAT><EDIT>. If the expected proportions are all equal, you can
answer the first question with a “1” and the program will fill L1 for you. Otherwise, enter the
proportions yourself in L1.
Press <PRGM>, highlight the line that reads “FITTEST”, and press <Enter> twice, once to put a command
on the calculator, once to actually run the program. (If there was any unfinished junk on the command
line of the calculator before you did this, you may have to <CLEAR> and start again.)
Answer 1 or 0 to the “All=” question (“Q=”), and the program will display the value of the chi-square
statistic and the p-value. Test with L2={13,23,24,20,27,18,15} and “1” for the “All =” question. You
should get chi-sq=7.6 and p-value = 0.2689.
Note: expected counts will appear in L3
