The special membership meeting to cast the votes according to the proxies received was held on January 29, 2008. All three bylaws amendments passed. A total of 469 proxies were received, which was 29% of the membership and well above the 10% required to vote. The Bylaw amendments recommended by the ASBH Board of Directors to the membership were: (i) lengthen the terms of the President, President-Elect, and Immediate Past President from one year to two years; (ii) increase the number, lengthen the terms, and revise the manner of election of Nominating Committee members; and (iii) facilitate the use of electronic communication. The 2008 Call for Board and Nominating Committee Nominations on the ASBH Web site reflects these changes. The ASBH Board of Directors thanks everyone who participated in this important vote. The Bylaws are currently being revised according to the changes and will replace the Bylaws on the Web site soon. We invite you to think about the Back to Top many meanings one might extrapolate from this term, for instance looking ahead to the future of bioethics and the medical humanities or what about bioethics and the medical humanities may make the future tense or uncertain or perhaps even looking back over the last 10 years to discuss the major issues and changes, what was resolved and what might the future still bring. 11th Annual National Undergraduate Bioethics Conference Union College, Schenectady, NY April 4th and 5th 2008 Each year the ASBH selects a school to host an undergraduate conference on bioethics. It is a celebration of undergraduate research and an opportunity to introduce a new generation of students to the field of bioethics. In 2008 the event will be hosted by one of the nation's oldest liberal arts colleges, Union College, in Schenectady, New York. Reflecting the ASBH's commitment to the medical humanities, the theme for this year's conference is "The Human Use of Human Beings in Medicine and Science." Tod Chambers, ASBH President and author of Narrative Bioethics, will open the conference with a talk on "Witches, Punks, and Bioethicists." Another keynoter will be the award-winning journalist Harriet Washington, who was a Research Fellow in Medical Ethics at Harvard Medical School and is the author of Medical Apartheid: The Dark History of Medical Experimentation on Black Americans from Colonial Times to the Present. Also addressing the conference will be the prominent medical historian Susan Lederer, Chair of the Department of Medical History and Bioethics at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, author of Frankenstein: Penetrating the Secrets of Nature. Back to Top In addition to student presentations and keynote speeches, a series of panels and workshops will introduce students to bioethics and bioethicists. Editors and former editors of leading journals (AJOB, Bioethics) will discuss behind the scenes at a journal. Bioethicists based in medical facilities and research institutes will share their experiences, as will medical students and bioethics graduate students. Adding to the excitement will be a "Bioethics Bowl," a series of formal debates on bioethical topics by teams from Dartmouth, the National Hispanic University, Union College, University of Miami, and other schools. Please encourage interested undergraduates to join the festivities and/or to submit papers, skits, plays or other presentations.
