(1) Will use weekly folders which provide a week’s worth of work only. Folder with assignments opens and closes for that week only (resources continue). (2) Will post an engaging schedule/outline for the week that is sent by e-mail through Angel and campus e-mail. (3) All online materials are color coded. (4) Will set up an agent present in Angel to show her 3 different grade level score reports on papers done by all students. Writes 4 different personalized e-mails which let students know their assignments were received on time and gives basic feedback to each group. Keeps contact with online students frequent to promote engagement and accountability. Goal is to provide more representational strategies so students benefit from more visual input and build use of technology skills. Will use color coding of materials as he teaches three different subjects to the same students. Will use e-mail to communicate expectations to students which he expects them to check. Also will send out more resources electronically. Goal is to use engagement strategies to provide structure and accountability specifically related to writing thematic essays. Each week (1) over the weekend students will read the materials related to the theme; (2) write in notebook; (3) receive weekly feedback/grade on notebook; (4) do grammar practices from text and write group summaries; and (5) use lecture and discussion. Goal is to use representational strategies to provide more visual input. Will use PowerPoint to enhance lectures which feature Google images. These PowerPoint’s will be available to students after class for review. Will also experiment with using different colors to match the period he is focusing on in Humanities. Goal is engagement and representation in her theme based ENG 101 class. Will use Angel to post schedules, assignments, and grades. This is a lead up to a larger goal of getting her 101 class to a hybrid by fall 2011. Will use weekly memos to respond to online 1 Minute Questions sent to students about what they are learning, what is confusing, and what they need. PILOT COHORT 5 Spring 2011 Sheri Gietzen Written Communications Diana Marre Transitional Studies ENG 85 Christy Perotti Fresh Start FRESH 100 Rosalie Robinson Transitional Studies - AESL Goal is to promote engagement and accountability in her theme based ENG 101 class. Will require students to: (1) Prep for each class by writing a one page journal assignment on the reading due every class day using journal template as a prompt. (2) Participate in class group activity using 4-5 students who discuss the reading with guided questions. This work is graded and preps them to cite their quotes. (3) Projects – each group creates one of the 7 weekly quizzes on the reading together; students work together on peer reviews of essays and outlines; groups engage in collaborative source sharing on research essays. Teacher will model the first 2. Goal is to use an engagement strategy of writing a published class book together which everyone contributes to through writing personal narratives or poems or art work. This is a theme based project centering on Egypt ancient or modern. Will start the process in the first week through journal entries. All work is peer reviewed and printed in the TCC Print Shop. Goal is engagement of students in a HOL environment. Will use (1) Color coding – by categories of in-class, week-end, and handouts to save for test. Will develop (2) Grade Tracking Sheet on paper and add posting grades with Angel or Grade A. Will also write up assignment sheets which describe the group projects which include the due dates and points. (3) Will ask students to submit work by e-mail or in class. (4) Will use more active assignments such as using cell phones to do polls in class. (5) Will post daily schedule. Goal is to enable students to use expression strategies in writing related to their learning style to bring out their best writing. This is also an engagement strategy as students feel their needs are being met. All students will take a Learning Styles Inventory. They will also take an Environmental Preferences survey. Using the combined information from these surveys, Rosalie will develop activities related to learning styles represented in class and model how each learning preference would best approach each class activity which ends in a choice to be made by the student. PILOT COHORT 5 Spring 2011 Amber Smith Math 107 Math 148 (2) Goal is to provide more access to teaching materials through electronic resources. Interested in using a web page or a blog so that she could assign 2 students to take notes each day and post them. This would count for a homework grade. Will continue using Grade A for grades. Will discuss this further with Andy and Jo.
