Surcharge Authorization Procedures
TEXAS WOMAN’S UNIVERSITY
State law requires TWU to pay a TRS surcharge(s) on all TRS retirees who retired on or after
September 2005 and become employed with the University in a benefits eligible position.
Individual departments incur the budgetary impact of all TRS retiree surcharges, therefore TRS
retirees requiring a surcharge must have department head and then VP/Provost approval prior
to the offer of employment.
Total surcharges are calculated depending on the retiree’s prior employment circumstances,
current retiree health insurance carrier and other various factors. Benefits Department
personnel in the Office of Human Resources may electronically research total surcharges for
individual applicants. Please contact one of the following members to obtain TRS surcharge
information.

After the total TRS surcharge is determined and the department has decided to seek approval,
please complete the attached form and forward to the appropriate Department Head and
Vice President/Provost for approval. Completed and approved documents should be
forwarded to the Office of Human Resources.
