The exhibit title refers to the “rule of thumb” from English common law which allowed a man to legally beat his wife with a whip or stick the size of the diameter of his thumb. Although the law no longer exists, domestic violence continues to pose a serious threat to the health and safety of many Americans. According to the American Institute on Domestic Violence, domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to women in the United States, with 5.3 million women abused each year. Lerma, an Albuquerque painter and installation artist, collected testimony and researched the subject extensively before attempting to visually communicate the depth of the problem to the public. The exhibit will open with a reception from 4 to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 19. For more information, call 428-1230.
