emergency supplies grouped together
for convenient, urgent access if you
have to evacuate quickly.

• This is the most important item in your kit.
• It is recommended to store at least one
gallon per person per day for drinking and
washing. Store as much as possible.
• Your body needs more water when it’s under
stress.

• Long-lived dry and packaged foods work best, like

after a major disaster. Pay phones might be
the only phones still operating.

Bay Area Earthquake Impact
• There is a 62% probability of a strong earthquake (over 6.7) hitting
San Francisco in the next 30 years caused by the Hayward or San
Andreas fault.
• In San Francisco, approximately 88,000 units will be destroyed and
overall 180,000 Bay Area.
• 660,000 people in the Bay Area will be displaced from their homes
and 330,000 people will have to go to a public shelter.
• Over 12,000 roads in the Bay Area will be closed along with damage
to bridges and overpasses.

Things to Keep in Mind!
• During an earthquake, get underneath a table and hold on or go to
an inside corner and cover your head. Don’t stand in a doorway.
• Avoid injuries AFTER the earthquake: Protect your hands & feet.
Beware of aftershocks.
• Large-scale disasters may render cell phones and the internet
useless. Texting may be your best option for communicating with
someone out of the area.
• Transportation disruptions may prevent you from leaving.
• Plan to take care of yourself for at least 3 days but it is
recommended you have enough supplies for 7 days.

• You may have no power
• You may have no heat
• You may have no water
• Immediate emergency help may be unavailable
• You may be unable to contact family
• Your home may be damaged and you might be unable
to return to it
But you have a plan and you have a kit so you
and your family and your pets are OK

opening it. If it’s cool, open it slowly.
